ephotozine k-7 review

(Mods - the search function doesn't seem to be working so if this has been posted before, please delete the thread)

In my eagerness for the K-7 I've been looking for every preview/review out there, and just came across this one from ephotozine: Pentax K-7 Digital SLR Review

The only good things to note are the ISO comparison shots and another HDR example, otherwise the review sounds oddly cynical but ends by saying that it's the most exciting camera of the year (but then he states right after that that he thinks the Oly E-620 is the best DSLR ever made...........yeah)

A couple other odd things to note:

"The shutter is newly developed for the K-7 boasting a top speed of 1/8000sec which is pretty good for a camera aimed at this market..."
- Huh? Pretty good for its market? What camera goes faster than 1/8000s?

In discussing the composition adjustment feature: "The frame can be moved around to use the excess pixels (usually denoted in a specification list as total pixels) on the sensor."
- Is it just me, or does it sound like they're not aware that the sensor is actually moving?

And I'm guessing this must have just been a typo about the HDR function: "if you prefer the distorted HDR effect over the natural effect found in Adobe Photoshop CS4 then this will be right up your alley."

Pretty sloppy all around, but I thought I'd share.

Ephotozine have never seemed to be very keen on Pentax. Just take it with a pinch of salt and judge accordingly.

Funny minuses.

It's not easy to make Full HD video at 30 fps at 14.6 MP sensor.
And it's PHOTO camera, not video.

I'm so impressed with the K-7 that I think this is one of the most exciting cameras released this year. I think this could rival the Olympus E-620 which I'm tipping as one of the best DSLRs ever made.

Terribly review, his facts aren't even correct

I'm sure they could benefit from an email to correct the things stated there. Especially the one about the moving sensor. That's pretty stupid about the composition adjustment with the "extra pixels"

The underexposed photo? Haha she's pretty light-skinned and standing in front of a bright wall. You don't need flash to fix that, just expose/meter properly.

E-620 Funny...
the oly looks like a great camera, but let's see:

K-7 vs e-620

max 15 raw - max 5 raw
ISO6400 - ISO3200
100%VF - 95%VF
77-seg meter - 49-seg meter
11-point AF - 7-point AF
AF assist - pop-up flash assist
5 frame bracketing - 3 frame []
shutter 1/8000 - 1/4000
x-sync socket - n/a
mirror-lock up - n/a
movie mode - n/a
3" 920k px LCD (wb adjust) - 2.7" 230k
cons:
$1299 - $799

hmm. right. That looks like a spanking

but the pricing says it all. The K-7 is only a wonder for us pentaxians, it's not that far ahead.

K-7's body is magnesium alloy with stainless steel frame + weather/cold resist
+ a lot of features...14.6 MP vs 12 MP.

the writer of the article must have smoked some really good shit ! lol

clearly a case of "Writers gone Bad". the comparison is not even close nor fair. can't believe he missed out on the E-3 and E-30. that could had been a more sensible comparison.

What I care and don't care

I don't care much about what he writes and his personal opinions. But I do care about the image quality of the sample photos posted.

The K-7 samples are slightly out-focus, polished with no details (although the noise level is acceptable). Even the K-m did it far better. So, what's the point of getting a 14.6MP DSLR if it is going to give you less details and effective resolution than a 10.2 MP K-m??

For quick direct comparison of the ISO 800 between that K-7, K-m, GX-20, Oly E-620 and Canon 500D taken by the ephotozine, I have linked to them all in my this blog entry:-

RiceHigh's Pentax Blog: Ephotozine Pre-production K-7 Review (with ISO Samples)

After viewing all those different K-7 sample photos and videos by different people in the recent days, I have not a good feeling about the near future and what will happen when the production K-7 arrives.

As long as the IQ of the K-7 can stand up on a par with the competition, these *additional* features are important. Otherwise, they are *all* meaningless!

what? Thats full screen resolution. If it was any more we'd just get impossible files.

And to RH, even if the image quality is lower, the features are not meaningless. They are still good points that will make the camera better to use. Stop being silly.

This site is so weak to make any conclusion about cameras.

Hi RH, I left you a blog entry.

Basically, all samples you cross-linked (and the links don't work) are out of focus, from all vendors. Except K-m for whatever reason (smaller aperture?).

The reviewer simply didn't care to focus properly as these are meant to be noise tests. We know that detail is important in noise tests, the reviewer obviously does not.

So maybe, you revisit your blog article as I think it is misleading.
