New DA series Weather Resistant Lens's

Pentax has released a couple of new DA series weather resistant lens's.

I'd be keen to know if anyone knows anything further on these?

How they compare with the old versions, pricing, & why they did not include a 55-300mm in the mix etc? (This to me seems important given the twin lens kits currently sold by competitors include ??-300mm).

They should be available at the same time as the K-7, with the 18-55 at an MSRP of $200 and the 50-200 at an MSRP of $250 (actual prices will likely be lower).

The 18-55 WR is probably the same optically as the 18-55 ii which was introduced with the K20D, which means it already has a refined optical design and excellent performance for what it is. The 50-200 hasn't changed in the past, with the current one having excellent colors and bokeh, but not so sharp. Reports from early users are that the 50-200 WR has an updated optical formula for improved sharpness.

More WR lenses will come, don't worry. This is just the start.

Thanks for the prices and info.

I'm glad more will be coming. I sort of wish I had of waited in a way but I guess that's always the story. One could wait for ever. hehe.

I'd like a 55-300mm next. Weather resistant would be nice, but I am guessing with the KM twin lens kit's being offered every where currently having the DA 55-300mm (Non WR version) lens, there is likely to be a lot of these available for a good price soon via the normal Ebay drop ship selling etc.

Oh well. Maybe when they release the K300D with true pentaprism viewfinder and AA batteries it will also include the DA 18-55, & 55-300 WR lens's in a twin lens kit.

The 55-300 would be nice, but what I'm most interested personally is a WR compact prime... Pentax's only weathersealed primes currently are the DA* 55, 200 and 300, and they're pretty expensive and anything but compact. Most primes are pretty tight in construction, but it'd be nice to know it's sealed.

I do wonder if these DA - WR series will replace the normal equivalents or whether they are meant to be a more up market option?

On thing I noticed already is different filter diameters between the DA 18-55 (52mm) & 50-200 (49mm) WR.

I really hope if they do a DA 55-300 WR they keep the filter size at 52mm once again.

It's nice when you buy a basic two lens camera kit to be able to share filters etc between lens's when starting out.

the IQs are good in my opinion plus WR makes these lenses excellent considering these are only kit lenses. such capabilities makes these lenses some notches higher compared to their kit lens counter parts with VR feature. for the price, these are real bargain. the only thing that kept me from getting these lenses is the speed.

In this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IVfaqRMU0g&feature=related
pictures are shown of several lenses, most of them are weather sealed, except for a few older non-star DA lenses, such as the 16-45 and the 12-24. I wonder what the guy is talking about and what brings these lenses together? I'm hoping maybe they're planning to release WR versions of all of those in the video that are not WR yet.
Can anyone translate?

The 18-55 and 50-200 WR are optically identical to their non-WR cousins.
They are quite good kit lenses, but still kit lenses.

Pentax are working on more WR lenses, but it is too early yet to say when they will come.

50-200 was choosen because it cost less than the 55-300.

Aye. I suppose Pentax couldn't have it all - WR kit lenses to give everyone a WR choice and some WR pro-grade primes and zooms. I wish it were the latter, but I can see where they're coming from (and you're more likely to get a good copy of a DA 18-55 than a good DA* 16-50...)

Is the 17-70 weather sealed? I've heard numerous reports that it is indeed sealed, but not any facts backing it up.

THe 17-70 has a rubber seal ring on the mount, but apart from that it is not sealed AFAIK.

I believe Pentax did this WR affordable kit lens inorder to go with the Pentax weather-sealed bodies. otherwise it would had been useless. more flexibility I suppose. I think this is a good move by Pentax. this would make a lot of people shoot more under the rain, snow , desert and seas.

The DA 17-70 has a sealed lens mount, but other parts are not sealed so it has less sealing than those new DA WR-lenses.

I expect more DA WR lenses to come this fall, after the summer.
Pentax also has a new body to release, the model in-between the K-m and the K-7.
It is logical that when Pentax releases this new body, they also will release a couple of lenses.

it is good to here that Pentax/Hoya will release more WR lenses. on the otherhand, will these new WR lenses affect the price of older but excellent Pentax glasses? I know that the previous Pentax kit lens AL/AL II got their prices down as low as $100 and below. cheapest one is at $70 brand new. but how about the faster prime and zoom lenses with a max 2.8 aperture?

Any news about SDM II?
