CONFIRMED UK Prices - No Rumour

Over on the UK forum Chris from SRS has confirmed the new UK prices. For those who don't know, Chris is a great person to deal with and his firm does a lot to promote Pentax. I wish them luck with these prices!

Please read the old rumours thread for details. I will summarise here.

These rises are coming straight from Pentax.

These are just the selling prices. RRP is actually higher!

The excuse given is the value of the Yen versus British Pound Sterling. While this can account for a significant increase, some of these lenses are going up much much more than that. So the given reason is not the entire truth.

Prices have also risen throughout Europe and in Canada. It's not just the UK, so it can't simply be about the value of the pound.

Some speculate Hoya wishes to price Pentax as a premium brand, no longer the value-leader.

OK, I've found as many before and after prices as I could. Lenses are organised by focal length, first zooms, then primes. The kit lenses are not changing in price but every other lens is! I've marked those that have gone up in a previous hike.

Code:
DA 10-17mm       £339 -> £ 480
DA 12-24mm £519 -> £ 990
DA 16-45mm £265 -> £ 280
DA* 16-50mm £529 -> £ 835 [changed]
DA 17-70mm £349 -> £ 530
DA L 18-55mm £ 35
DA 18-55mm II £ 49
DA 50-200mm £ 99 -> £ 169
DA 55-300mm £199 -> £ 295
DA* 50-135mm £549 -> £ 919 [changed]
DA* 60-250mm £899 -> £1150
Code:
DA 14mm          £519 -> £ 579
DA 15mm £599 -> £ 649
DA 21mm £375 -> £ 485
FA 31mm £699 -> £1100
DA 35mm £289 -> £ 489
DA 40mm £220?-> £ 379 [changed]
FA 43mm £369 -> £ 745
FA 50mm £159 -> £ 439 [changed]
DFA 50mm £349 -> £ 470
DA* 55mm £399 -> £ 640
DA 70mm £345?-> £ 485 [changed]
FA 77mm £599 -> £ 790
DFA 100mm £??? -> £ 525 [changed]
DA* 200mm £709 -> £ 980
DA* 300mm £899 -> £1199
If you see any bargains around, that's not because the price is not changing; it's just an old stock bargain.

P.S. Someone else can calculate the percentage increase, if they so wish.

I just noticed: under this new pricing regime, the DA 16-45mm is the best deal in the entire catalogue.

Next we'll see the same list from the US. Then they can hype the heck out of new cameras like the K-7 while we all start shooting other brands. All this glass price increase has done for me is re-allocate my funds. K-7 purchase is on hold. Now I'm looking at any holes in my lens line up and filling that while I can still afford it.

I'll be one giving serious consideration to Canon when the time comes. Why them? I can use my growing collection of Taks and odd ball lenses. I was just about to push the buy it button on a K-7. Not now. A week ago the plan was to have 2 K-7's with grips, a K20D/grip as backup, a K10D with a split screen for foolin with the screw mounts.

So looking at these prices I put my options this way:
1) Take that money and load up on a couple of lenses I'd like to complete my kit and wait till next year for a new camera?
2) Just do nothing, shoot what I have till it wears out (I fire upwards of 2500-3000 frames a week and a body is good for 100,000 or so). Then sell what's left and switch.

Problem for me is, I'll need to replace some lenses periodically as my business continues to grow. Working with a camera is very different than hobby shooting and is really hard on gear. You do your best to treat it well but invariably things are treated more roughly. So I've had lenses fail and expect that to happen again. If my $549.00 Da12-24mm (now $699 at B&H) becomes $999 +. I won't pay that price. Certainly considering the Canon 10-22mm is $699.00

We shoot this brand for a couple of reasons IMO.
1) Price/value. The lenses are as good or better than any brand and a decent value but they aren't bargains and prices are close to the other brands.
2) best line of primes in the business
3) good bodies with features that beat the competition at the price point.
4) WS and SR.

But we compromise for those advantages. We have a smaller lens line up. No primes between 77mm and 200. Nothing over 300mm (and no f2.8), No TC. Lots of missing accessories. Usually 2 cameras to choose from where even Oly has 4-6. No FF till I retire.

Moderate price increases I expect and will pay. But price gouging isn't going to cut it and all the hype over the K-7 is going to fade fast for people that want more than kit lenses. I suspect they will hold the current prices on glass till around September. Get lots of new shooters with the new body and then.....

I'm so glad I went for this:

Sigma 100-300mm f4 EX IF DG Lens - Pentax Fit (134945) - Warehouse Express

It has a full frame image circle too, so it will work on whatever (if ever...) full frame body Pentax release; I won't get caught short by not future proofing, especially at those prices!

i agree with peter, as i said in the other thread, canon looks more and more tempting.

peter: could you add a poll to see what the general reaction to this is on the forum (i have no idea how to do that). i think it is important to see what our (worldwide) community is thinking about this.

edit: here is the other thread, i also wrote a proposal of what a poll might look like

Yes, tempting indeed, especially when you've got this:

Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 L USM Lens (2569A018AA) - Warehouse Express - I hear is one of the best Canon zooms at f/2.8 for £1045

and:

Pentax DA* 60-250mm f4 ED (IF) SDM Lens (21750) - Warehouse Express - and this from Pentax at £100 more for £1149. Yes it's a longer lens, but not really much and it's only f/4

But with a similar f/4 Canon example for £547.99

Canon EF 70-200mm f4 L USM Lens (2578A009AA) - Warehouse Express

Granted, that doesn't have inbuilt IS which would push the prices up, but if Canon release an IS camera body, then the writing will be on the wall.

It's a bit frustrating.

Insurance Implications

Check your insurance policies folks!

My stuff is all insured against accidental damage, but my 16-50 has now crept above the 'list individual items with a value of >£1000' threshold!

I assume this clause relates to street prices and not MRRP or else my 50-135 is there as well. Need to check with my insurers.

I started that thread with a post relaying the fact that the 50-135 is now selling at £919. News, I would say, not rumour.

Bad pentax

I fell for it....
With these worldwide price increases I just ordered the 60-250 for € 1.089,00.
It was not even high on my wishlist

Well, I guess that's *one* way to 'keep film alive.'

That's a potentially-alarming development, really, if US prices do anything like that. I've already held off on a few purchases cause the price of *third party* stuff went up

Adorama raised the price of the DA 21mm from $429 to $649 since yesterday. I am seriously reconsidering my purchase of the K7. Amazon hasn't shipped yet. I'm going to decide today or tomorrow, but if that's the kind of gouging the company is going to do on the lenses, I'm not sure I want to stick with them. That's part of the attraction of pentax for someone like me. Reasonably priced non zoom lenses.

I have a lot of $ and time tied up in Pentax equipment, but the prices are approaching Nikon. And for that kind of money I would buy Nikon. I'll just keep the M/A's for the K1000's and K2.

Good thing I found out about this now. I was about to make a big investmetn in digital lenses for the K7. As it stands now I really only lose out on the DA 40 and DA 35 and the Sigma 10-20/50 Macro/Macro 28.

Just out of curiousity what does anyone think I could get for the 5 Pentax/Sigmas if I sold them as a lot if I throw in a Dine 105?

I'm really thinking it's time to switch to Nikon.

That's the Way It Should Work...

The old pricing policy drove Pentax out of business. Now, we are seeing its true value. We've known we've been getting good value for years... Too bad. First single malt scotch, now camera equipment.
