Are prices in Nikon and Canon going up too? Is it going up the same rate as Pentax price hikes? Can anyone confirm this?

Closely followed by Sigma IMO. Some of their lenses really took a "nice" increase of price (like 100-300/4).

with the current price hike of the pentax lenses, is the pentax still cheaper compared to canon or nikon lenses as of now?

I don't think so.

It is really hard to say how good a deal Pentax is versus Canon/Nikon. Looking at B and H, the Canon 70-200 IS f2.8 is about 1800 dollars, while the 70-200 f4 IS is 700 dollars. The Nikon 70-200 f2.8 is about 1900 dollars. The Pentax DA* 50-135 is 800 dollars and the 60-250 f4 is 1300. I don't know what deals are available elsewhere, but this comparing these lenses at B and H.

Of course, Pentax doesn't offer a 70-200 f2.8, so you are sort of comparing apples and oranges as far as focal lengths. The other thing is that Canon and Nikon have a couple of quite cheap primes (although most of their primes are quite steep).

I think the difference between Pentax and Canon/Nikon as far as prices is that Pentax had held stable or even had decreasing prices over the years and then jumped their prices by 50 to 100 percent. On the other hand, Canon and Nikon have had price increases year by year and so while their prices may go up ten percent on a given year, they don't have any of the phenomenal price increases that shocked Pentaxians in February and March of this year.

no. in the case of canon, in most cases, it is cheaper. believe me, i hate to say this. if you stick with non-is l lenses, it can be half as expensive (for instance, i don't use the sr when shooting action, so i might as well get the non-is L lens for half the price, right?). if you need weathersealing like i do, canon is expensive (high end bodies), but if you factor in the lens prices, it might just not be..

so, regardless of how other brands increased the price steadily and pentax kept them stable (btw: really? i didn's see it this way. maybe in us), regardless of yen/dolar and so on, the direct comparison is clear at this point: pentax is simply more expensive than canon.

edit: i mentioned a "price survey" i made in another thread (it's not exactly scientific, but for what it's worth). these are europe prices. 100.00 USD=1,739.29, in case you are curious to see what those mean in us dolars (prepare to have a laugh if you are in usa )

I can only comment on Pentax prices in the US. I do think that having the option of using IS with every lens is a great plus. Certainly beats having to make the decision for each lens (if IS is available). Maybe you don't use it when shooting action, but what if you want to shoot some other things where you would benefit from IS/SR? You have to make the choice of whether it is worth it to you to pay the extra fee.

ok thx nanok, netuser and rondec for the infos. I tried looking at the amazon prices and its exactly what rondec says. Pentax has the cheapest high end zooms f2.8. but more expensive at med zooms f4. and primes. The question is when will the prices go down?

Yep, but just remember that in Europe we have that lovely VAT we all love and enjoy which add quite some fun in the buying activity

More reason for europeans to buy in the US if they come by

correct, prices in europe have always been higher, especially for japanese products, however that was just an anecdotic note, it does not invalidate the direct comparison with the other manufacturers (we pay vat for those too)

rondec: that's true, about shake reduction, it's one thing i really like about the pentax system (smc-m 50/1.4 with sr? hehe) but when the premium lenses are priced the same as the vr/is lenses from the competition, you are basically paying for sr for every new lens you buy, and that makes you wonder.. (it comes down to having a choice to pay 1/2 price to give up sr, or not having that choice, and having to pay full price)

Yep, the VAT thing is only a valid argument when comparing prices in Europe against countries which do not have VAT (US being one of'em).

USD/JPY Currency Conversion Chart - Yahoo! Finance

Look at the forex trend... and wonder, how anything denominated in Yen can remain at a price point.
