I think maybe he meant that the 250 is weaker than the rest of the range of the 60-250. I'm sure it is. I haven't really pixel peeped throughoutthe zoom range yet. But I have noticed that the difference from 200 to 250 is absolutely negligable. I know that there shouldn't be much of a difference, butthe frame like barely moves when you zoom from 200 to 250. I feel like it's not actually all the way to 250.

Not surprising as there is less then 1.5 degrees horizontal field of view between 200mm and 250mm. 6.9 degrees at 200mm to 5.5 degrees at 250mm but at 135mm it is 10.2 degrees. So compared to a 50-135 this is big differents.

The DA* 300/4 has a (new) list price of $1400
The DA* 200/2.8 has a (new) list price of $1200
The 600/4 or 300/2.8 when still available on order had a list price like $6400, if my memory is correct.

The price of very long glass is mainly a function of diameter in mm (of its "weight").

Based on $1200/6400 price points, this formula would be:
price = $0.0917 * (f/N)^2.226
where f is the focal length and N its numeric aperture.

The resulting price for a DA* 400/4 is
$ 2600.-
or between twice the price of a DA*200/2.8 and DA* 300/4; and 200/2.8, 300/4, 300/2.8, 400/4 and 600/4 would all be modelled by a single price function.

Last edited by falconeye; 08-22-2009 at 12:26 PM. Reason: updated formula because 200/2.8 is smaller than 300/4. This increased the price from 2400 to 2600.

2400 $ is a fairly high price but still affordable. For this lens class they should use a ring sdm engine may be this will increase the price a bit.
I'll surely buy it.

Make a longer zoom with the DA50-135 IQ

The DA50-135 zoom hasn't left my camera much, since i bought it a month ago. What is so impressive about this zoom is the prime lens like quaity of its images!!!

I also have the DA 300, I've using it more now, especially since i have a backup camera to use it on. But its usefuness l is degraded for me since it doesn't have any zoom capability. The "zoom with your feet" concept is somewhat lacking in my part of the country where trees, waterways, and other obstructions often prevent position movement.

I think that a zoom like a 120-400 would sell very well if it had anything like the 50-135 quality. a prime 400 would not interest me. just my opinion but we all don't have the same image needs or wants.

Anything new of this:

Pentax DA* 11-16mm f/2.8 and DA* 400mm f/4

or is it still pure speculation, rumours and hopes?

... right!
On the other hand, I too wish that such a lens would be available to fill that missing focal length I would like.
Sold my Sigma 10-20 a while back, now I "need" the UWA again.

A DA* 11-16/2.8 and a DA* 135-300/2.8 (or 135-400/4) as bookends to my DA* 16-50/2.8 + 50-135/2.8, and the circle would be complete.

How about it Pentax???

(And yes I use primes. Just bought the Sigma 50/1.4... fantastic for portraiture. Would have preferred the DA* 55/1.4 but it's nearly 3x the price of the Sigma here in Aus!)
