"Headline" My Meeting at Pentax News...

Hello Everybody...

I spent four and one half hours with the heads of Pentax today. Now before I share the news I can share with you at this time, there are a couple of issues I wish to address. Anyone wishing to purchase a K100 or K10D, do so. These models will be with us till at least next year. I would not make this announcement if I felt that it would affect negatively the sales of Pentax in any way, therefore this proviso. The two above cameras will be part of the line.

Here is what will be added and this does not include the 645D.

There will be two (2) you heard it, at least two new DSLR's coming out in the Fall, that will not conflict with the K100 or the K10D!

There will be a slew of new lenses.

Pentax is NOT going out of business. They have just opened factories in China and Vietnam and are investing heavily in R&D.

There is a new marketing approach that is being implemented that will orient the retailers towards Pentax, which will be very innovative to say the least. This approach will commence in the European territories.

Pentax France is the most robust of all of the other European companies and are doing extremely well.

I will also add that Pentax are working overtime to alleviate some of the growing pains that some of you have encountered and will find solutions asap.

And finally, Pentax needs all of our support and as a family Pentax will continue to respond on a more personal level than any other company I have ever had an affiliation with.

The "Salon de la Photo" in Paris is going to be an incredible event. We will be doing something that no other company has ever done and I must say that I spearheaded this project with the delight of all those at Pentax France. I will share more at the appropriate time.

Let's just say that it will be interactive and not virtual.

None the less, it felt great to be at Pentax today. The people I met were affable human and had a great sense of humor.

Ben

HI Ben - very interesting

I assume you mean these new cams are IN ADDITION to the 645D. The way you expressed it was misleading....

However good news. Hope to get the new glass soon!! Thanks for sharing.

BTW I never worried about Pentax going out of business - the fact that there is so much focus on them is great from their credibility POV.

I said "and this does not include the 645D" which means two more plus the 645D...

Now if we just had information and a timeline on the 645D! As a landscape and architectural photographer as of this Fall, that is the camera of interest to me!

Exciting! Thanks Benjikan.

I understand two new DSLRs are one below K100D (to compete with D40x and Oly E-410) and the other above K10D (to compete with D200 and 40D successors). Correct?

Ben

Is it possible that the D645 will come in two versions....
One the announced 31mp (or is it 32mp?) Kodak sensor and the other that will use the kodak 39mp just for studio work?
I was reading the 31mp is more sensative to light (as would be needed for all different photography) and the 39mp is has very limited sensitivty (only very low ISO, as that is all that is needed in most studios)

thanks

randy

So , just speculating here....say you have a K10D and the next year they come out with new sensors that are bigger. Are the DA lenses you bought obselete? Just curious what happens to those. I realize my 35mm limiteds would work fine.

Great news, Ben!

I've been waiting to pick up a K10D until I finish my present gig (which keeps getting pushed out further into the summer). Any hints as to whether or not the new higher end model would be more appropriate for part time wedding work? The K10D would be a great all-rounder, but since it looks like I won't be home until August, I could wait a little more if it makes more sense. I'm more interested in final output and usability than price (within reason). Either way, I'm sold on the new Pentax offerings!

I'm so glad Pentax is reclaiming its position in the digital world and renewing that great reputation (I started with Pentax back in the 70's and 80's).

I've been lurking here for a while but have really enjoyed all the great info you all have to share. Dpreview forums have been steadily slipping since so many helpful folks seem to be migrating here (by choice or otherwise).

Best regards,
Mark

If you can't mention features for these new DSLRs, could you at least mention price brackets? If the K1D is $1500, I think it's out of my league :-)

I'd also like to know if the DA lenses would work w/ a 1.25x crop sensor. I'm assuming everyone is going to switch to the new 1.25x 12.6Mpix Sony sensor as they phase out the 6Mpix one...

Hello Mark;

Thanks for your very well thought out remarks. I am committed to the K10D, as it represents a perfect platform for my magazine work. Think of the K10D as a tool for most applications, especially weddings as it produces excellent A3+ prints without a hitch. I would recommend you get the K10D as it will be available for quite some time. There will be several future firmware updates that will improve on already a very fine image capturing tool. I will be using the K10D shortly for a very unique and prestigious magazine that has a limited run of 5000 issues and sells for 45€. I will announce what the magazine is shortly and give out the web site. It will come out at the end on June, 2007. It will be printed on heavyweight archival paper. If I can use the K10D for this type of support, well, you know...

One more thing...Comparing the new Pentax DSLR's to the K10D and K100D is like comparing apples to oranges. The K10D represents a formidable opponent to the Nikon D200 and Canon 30D and represents the best bang for the buck camera that exists today. As you know, it just won the prestigious "TIPA" award for Best Expert Camera for 2007.
