Canon held their $3299 launch price for one full year before they dropped it $400. I feel D700 launch and subsequent price drops made Canon ask less for 5D Mark II. I highly doubt the typical 5DII price will shed one cent in one year. Had there been no affordable full frame D700 I'd guess canon would have started at $3299 again. D700 launch at $2999 changed the full frame playing field.
Back in the day, before 5D launched a full frame eos would run you $8,000. 5D price was quite revolutionary, though its really not pro-spec'd. The "pro~sumer" 5D spec doesn't keep photographers from making money with 5D.
The only thing that may change the way 5D mark II price drops in the near future is what the D700x launches at. HD and full frame nikon due to announce very soon. No credible price points offered as of yet. And Nikon's better and best glass is deeply backordered likely due to the 100,000 D700 unit pace they make and sell annually.
