New lens from Samyang 14mm f/2.8

Polish distributor of Samyang posted information on its webpage about new lens to be introduced by the end of the year for all mounts, including Pentax obviously.

Samyang.pl nowo?ci

News in Polish but not much info just yet.

14 elements in 12 groups
Two ED lenses and two hybrid aspherical lenses
MFD 28cm

Would be interesting to compare it with DA 14mm

This one is a FF lens, while the Pentax IS APS-C. Both Sigma & Tamron aren't so hot on performance, I would be surprised if this is much difference.

Yes, but this is a new design, so I'll reserve my judgement.

traditionally, good wide angle lenses have been hard to come by (even the Nikkor 14/2.8 had it's problems), so I wouldn't expect miracles. However, if it is full frame, this could be very interesting and a lot of fun to use.

14mm on film would be aweeeesome Too bad Sigma 15-30mm isn't produced anymore.

By the way, we actually do have a full frame 14mm, the DA 10-17 is full frame starting at 14mm, so is the Sigma 10-20

It would at least (well, probably) provide a FF 14mm at decent price, but I expect it to be MF just as the 85mm.

I do not think that at 14mm I would care too much about AF.
Its hyper-focal at almost any setting.

Two observations:

1) That front lens looks very strange to me. Is the picture cropped? You can't just have a lens element that is cut like that!

2) Again the front element. It is very protruding! More extreme even than most fish eyes. Won't be easy to protect from either scratch or flare!

It doesn't look radically different from the SMC Pentax 1:3.5/15. That one also had a very large front element.

You should really look at the WHITE elements, not the grey ones. The grey is the barrel and sunshade of the lens

I think what you see is just outline of the hood.

If they can keep the price low enough and still deliver some sharpness I would be very interested. I am saving up for the da 14mm but would consider this if it is quality.

Most 14mm FF lenses have a bulbous front element- I have seen the Tamron AF 14/2.8 and the Nikonn 14/2.8 and they both have the fish-bowl style front elements.
