K-x is definitely sweet and I am pretty sure it will find its market, but the thing that hits me the most is the switch of the sensor manufacturer to Sony.

Is the K-x ( a little parrot camera ) also a proving ground for the future use of Sony sensors in all pentax cameras? I'd like to hear some thoughts here.

Well, several Pentax bodies already used Sony sensors...

Does anyone know if this is the same Sony sensor used in the Nikon D90/D5000?

I had seen somehere some speculation that it was, but am sceptical...

Mind you, if it IS the same sensor as the D90, that would be absolutely fantastic, since the D90 sensor is about the best you can get in APS-C at the moment, with great DR and high ISO performance.

Here's hoping it is.

Where do you see the switch of the sensor manufacturer?! Only K20D and K-7 use Samsung sensors. All others - K10D, K100D, K110D, K200D, K-m (K2000) use Sony sensors. Pentax use two manufacturers of sensors starting with K20D.

Assumption being the mother of all... I was not aware Sony sensors are used in older pentax cams, I was sure only for Nikon. However, I expected, given their "partnership" status with Samsung, that new cameras are to be based on Samsung sensors.

However in that case, no Sony CMOS sensor has been used so far in Pentax cameras, all of the stated above use CCD sensors. For CMOS hi-res sensors used in 2 cams until now, Pentax relied on Samsung.

And this camera is probably a first product-grade test of PRIME II being paired with a CMOS sensor other than Samsung's.

To rephrase my question: If that product proves successful, do you think it would bring a Sony sensor in a newer higher grade Pentax camera?

Who knows?! We don`t know how is regulated partnership between Pentax and Samsung, and how btween Sony and Pentax, what is included in contracts between them. We don`t know how far is develpoment of next Samsung and Sony sensors, and we don`t know what decisions Pentax management will take. But I think, taking into account analogy what Pentax said about 645D that they will supply this camera with better chip for better price available for them in time of production of camera, the same strategy will be in future regarding DSLRs. That means in future there may be Sony sensors, Samsung sensors and may be others.
