Funny that you ask for physicists there

BTW, IEC 62220-1 is a norm written by physicists to measure noise. It is applied to x-ray photography where it does really matter as increasing the luminosity is killing people ...

This is a good description but it is in German:
ISS: DQE

You may find similiarly good descriptions in other languages when googling for the IEC standard.

BTW, dynamic range and noise are closely related but one cannot exactly be computed from the other. The reason for this is that noise isn't entirely shot noise. For shot noise only, it would be true. Also, both are meaningless measures if defined on the pixel scale.

Somebody said it here, because I made "copy-paste" of yana36's posts from dpreview forum sometimes.

Overall a positive review for the K-7.
Worth the wait...finally.

Like falk wrote though, what's with the K20/D50/D300 noise comparison test, and where was it for the actual K20D review?

Very suspicious...

K20D review was last year. This review makes me very happy I have K20D's and not the new K-7. K20D was and is a pretty good camera as shown by the K-7 review.

I think Pentax's next generation of DSLR's will be a big leap forward. I don't see Hoya as a me too camera company.

Mmmm? Why? Except the sensor, just everything is better. And quite better. I can testify.

Of course it was, and still is. There's nothing wrong with the K20D. The K-7's arrival doesn't make the previous camera a bad one. Not at all.

Good review. Maybe "Value" and "Ergonomics" should be a notch or two higher.

I wish they would release Digital Camera Utility 4 for older bodies.

Looking at ISO800 samples full screen, I am a bit confused that K-7 (and K20D) looks to have much more contrast and saturation than D300 or 50D. Did they shoot in vivid mode or what?
I agree, even the D300 got a 9.0 value when it was released for $2000...

JPEG engine for the k-7 adds a lot of contrast and saturation. That's why I shoot RAW!

The sensor is better too. And with new technology

I'm just curious ... did they upgrade the K-7 firmware before testing or was the review done on 1.0? I'm asking because I'm very impressed with the K-7 and not at all with the 50D (let's leave the D300 aside because I haven't had much experience with that camera).

I like the K-7 noise handling and really like the resolution/detail even tho at first the pictures taken with the K-7 seemed a bit soft (forgot to take into account that the pictures are bigger now).

@ogl
Is it true about the K-7 noise handling in RAW (starts at ISO1600)? Because I was sure you can change that in the settings and can set it to start NR at ISO200 and up or turn it off completely. I'm sure that setting works for both JPG and RAW.
Or are you talking about default settings where high ISO NR starts at ISO1600?

I thought it worth noting, DPR recently updated their rating system quite dramatically. K-7 went from 'Highly Recommended' to 74%. How do you go from 'highly recommended' to 'sub-par' [which I consider to be 74%] without changing the basis for the conclusion at all??

Maybe DPR does consider 74% to be highly recommended. Have you cross-referenced other camera reviews?

DPR gave the Canon 550D/T2i 77% or DPR Gold Award.
