Pentax D FA 100mm F2.8 Macro WR lens

Well well, now why would Pentax release a new lens suitable for FF...could it be the beginning we are hoping for?

With this being a Macro lens, I question at what magnification the lens is capable of covering the full frame? What does the fine print say? Will this lens cover full-frame at infinity?

D FA series lens features a “full frame” design, compatible with PENTAX film and digital SLR cameras, but optically optimized for digital imaging.
This is straight off the Pentax USA web site...am I reading too much into this? But it DOES say it is a FF lens optimized for digital imaging (not film)!
Surely it can have only one logical use?

if I read it right, it does say compatible with film and digital, but much better on digital optically. being a full frame design for digital would make a lens for a...........full frame dSLR?

The lens may be workable with film. But that doesn't mean it's best suited for it. There could be vignetting on the edges that film shooters wouldn't appreciate too well. Then there's also the issue of resolution/distortion on the edges. All of this ties into the question I asked above. How well is the lens intended to perform at infinity?

Yes...let build a weather sealed FF lens....when we have a non weathersealed FF lens on the market......why would we do such a thing?

Because we have so many FF Film weather sealed camera?.......no

if ever Pentax releases 2 cameras next year a medium range APS-C dslr and a FF dlsr either May 2010 and September 2010, I might save for either two til February 2011.

Maybe they want to weather seal all their cameras too? If they produce a FF weather sealed DSLR with a Sony 24 mega pixel sensor I will order mine now thank you very much....

Why would they lead into FF with something as esoteric as a 100mm lens? Makes no sense.

If they were roadmapping their lenses into FF territory, which is a pro space, wouldn't it make more sense for them to start introducing some FF equivalents to (for example) Canon L-series pro-grade workhorses like the 24-70 2.8?

But that wouldn't make much sense. 24-70 is not very useful right now on the crop bodies - whereas the 100mm has use on both crop and FF. It makes sense for Pentax to drop the lenses that would find uses on both sides *now*, and save the primarily-FF focal lengths for when the body itself actually hits.

Maybe next there'll be a WR FF fisheye, followed by a 60-120mm WR FF zoom and a 150mm shift lens.

Then they'll release the FF body and wonder why nobody's buying it.
