See page 9. Also note that cost reduction didn't touch the R&D expenses. Hoya is serious about Pentax.

Now if they can only add to R&D and Marketing while keeping a profit...

They just recently started to be profitable. Their operating margin, for the last three months (ending in September 2009) is 4.2%.

sorry, just a bit of light sarcasm..
People have to remember that "Pentax" w/ Hoya is really the Pentax group..
R&D may not have decreased as a whole but there is no way for us (in general) to know what part is allocated to what Pentax unit....
18% in the next 21/2 years of ALL of Pentax is the "goal"....

As to 2009.... many "losses" were paper I suppose.
Although medical-use endoscopes contributed to profits, the slump in the digital camera business, as well
amortization of goodwill following the merger
, resulted in an operating loss for the Pentax business in the fiscal
year under review.

The annual report says it all. DSLR sales for the Pentax brand were down. That combined with the fact that the K-7 isn't going to attract many people away from the Canon and Nikon brands dosen't paint a bright future for Pentax brand.

Funny you should say that.

For some reason I've been thinking they're turning the corner, rationalizing costs, intoducing exciting products and raising their visibility. I've also been thinking Imaging Systems turned slightly profitable in the most recent quarter.

I think they are in good shape. The kx is going to be a great seller! This is the kind of camera that attracts notice and doesn't have any negatives from a beginner standpoint. I expect the K7 to be a solid performer -- mainly starting toward the end of the year. What I have realized is that few Pentaxians are willing to buy at the top end of the price scale and wait until the price begins to drop to jump on a new product. It was that way with the K20 and it will be that way with the K7. When the K7 hits 950 US dollars, there will be plenty of people interested in buying it.

On the subject of people moving from Canon/Nikon, I haven't seen many, but I have seen an awful lot picking up one for a second "fun" camera.

I think it says digital cameras are down; not DSLR's. Pentax have been shrinking their P&S line as planned.

The K-7 sells very well. It is the Pentax the last 20 years that attracts more users from other brands than any other. The colorful K-x will do the same.

Sales were down compared to the same period last year, however, profits were up, in fact the camera division made a profit, and that augers well for Pentax when the economy starts to get going again.

Here is a direct quote for Hoyo's annual report about Pentax and it say they lost money; "Pentax
Pentax posted net sales of ¥122,190 million and an operating loss of ¥11,572 million. Although megapixel imaging capable endoscope systems performed well, overall medical endoscope sales were down due to the effects of foreign currency movements. In digital cameras, both SLR and compact camera sales dropped as a result of drastically lower demand and intensifying price competition.
Although medical-use endoscopes contributed to profits, the slump in the digital camera business, as well amortization of goodwill following the merger, resulted in an operating loss for the Pentax business in the fiscal year under review. "

In other words the camera division of Pentax sucked the profit right out of the entire Pentax group!
