Oh, please. This saying is just silly -- it suggests that every rumour is essentially true, which is a plainly false proposition.

Sometimes it's a full-blown conflagration, and most of the time it's somebody foolish playing with a box of matches. ;-)

No it just suggest that something is going on, not necessarily the same as the rumour.

What suggests that something is going on? An uncorroborated rumor?

One article from one newspaper immediately denied by the company in question doesn't mean something is going on.

No, but a statement from Hoya's executive saying they wanna havea deal for Pentax with an electonic guy to share costs of development is defenitely meaning something.

Yep, it means exactly what it said. That's never been in dispute.

The stories about JVC, however, are nothing more than rumor and speculation.

Yep.

I imagine those guys falling on their back for those rumours, just because old friends had a lunch together.

JVC Kenwood Abandons Plans to buy Pentax

QuoteQuote:
Nov. 28 (Bloomberg) -- JVC Kenwood Holdings Inc., a Japanese maker of stereo and car electronics, has abandoned plans to sell its music business, company spokesman Takaaki Nose said today.

JVC has also dropped any thought of acquiring Hoya Corp.s Pentax camera business, Nose said. The Nikkei newspaper first reported JVCs plan today, citing an interview with Chairman and President Haruo Kawahara.

The Yomiuri newspaper said on Nov. 4 JVC was in talks with Konami Corp. to sell its Victor Entertainment music unit and was considering a purchase of the Pentax camera brand. Yesterday, the company named a new head for its music division along with plans to rejuvenate the money-losing unit.

No proof at all. Those are coments from Reporter, not a press release.

Looks Credible

Per Bloomberg (as reliable as any), the Yomiuri newspaper quoted a JVC spokesman, who was identified by name - Takaaki Nose. LinkedIn has an entry for a person of that name who listed his current position as senior manager, investor and public relations for JVC KENWOOD Holdings.

Yomiuri Shimbum is identified by Wikipedia (yes, I know) as one of five national newspapers in Japan. World Association of Newspapers (WAN) lists that paper as having the largest circulation in the world. A quick look at the paper's English language Web site (done in conjunction with the AP) suggested to me it's a serious newspaper, one we used to call a newspaper of record.

That doesn't make the news correct. It does appear to make it quite credible.
