Ben Edict's point about Pentax not having an existing pro market support infrastructure is a valid one. As he also said, that limiting initial sales to Japan may be done with that in mind.

However, I don't for a moment believe that Pentax would expend development funds on a 645D for pure sentimentality. Certainly, having once been in that market, they are not intimidated by it. No, they are business minded and must think that there is some possibility that they could be a market presence. Also, the ability to share camera technology between the APS market and the MF market may give them an edge.

And it is surprising, when a vendor has a hot product, how doors open in retail markets.

With the progressive success of the K10,20,m,7 and x, I wouldn't advise betting against Pentax. As their ad says "be interesting" The bzzz from the 645D will undoubtedly help sales for their other cameras.

Does anyone know what the 645d will cost?

They might come in at Canikon's full frame prices, then its a choice for pro's Canikon full frame or a MEDIUM for same money

In a brand name many of them grew up using.

I'm still deliberating what the [645] between brackets means on the top LCD. Just a joke or is this supposed to show the picture format? If so then could this indeed be a multi-format camera?

It's possible that it either lets you crop to FF or APS-C sizes on the sensor or it simply lets you shoot in different aspect ratios (essentially just cropping the image at capture) and that bracket displays what you have set.

It looks very nice but also looks damn heavy and awkward.

I hope its somewhat light.

I don't see why it needs to be so ... long.

I cant see myself wanting to carrying this around after owning a Kx

Since the fields to the right say "Reserve [673]", my guess is that the [645] is how many remaining pictures you can fit on card 1 and the [673] is how many remaining pictures you can fit on card 2, or maybe some kind of built in reserve storage. Just a guess though.

For the speculation, it would have been more fun if the right field had said [6x7]

The medium format is so small. I'm waiting for a large format digital camera to come out for under $10,000.

Maybe the 645D will be able to use the new (upcoming) SDXC cards that can go up to 2 TB of storage and 104 MB per second transfer rate ...you think?

A little insider tease?

[645] (67II) -> [67-3]?
