Apart from the 18-250 they all make perfect sense.

I think the 18-250 is being discontinued because it is no longer being made by tamron, who was a partner for production of that lens - in other words, pretty much out of their hands.

the 16-45, that is just sad to see it go! but, the 17-70 is probably a worthy replacement, definitely an improvement in reach (the 16-45's only real knock).

last but not least, who can afford that big bad boy???

The end of the last FA* - on the other hand, I wonder how many of them they sell per year.

Possibly to be replaced with the Tamron 18-270? It's out in other mounts...

The 17-70 has SDM and longer reach, like you say. Makes sense from a marketing perspective.

Well, they're made-to-order...with a (what was it?) 3 month wait? 6 months?

Nor for Pentax, neither is the 60/2 macro or any VC version of their lenses.

Too bad the DA16-45 will be discontinued. The lense has a very high performance over cost ratio. I got mine for only $240 used. Now people upgrading from the kit lens will be forced to shell out ~$500 for the DA17-70, or even more for the DA*16-50.

The only reason the 16-45 goes so low is because the longer term owners got it for not much more than that ages ago when pentax had a long running $100 rebate (so between $250 and $300 new).

Ironically the Canon 600mm f4 IS sells for $2500 less than Pentax

Ironically the Canon 600mm f4 IS sells for $2500 less than HoyaPentax' newly discontinued, special order only 600mm f4.

What could one do with $2500 savings?

Buy a Canon 7D & also buy 1.4x TC and still have $500 spare change.
Or add $200 more & get a 5D Mark II instead & assuming Pentax would let you special order FA 600mm f4 tax free.

If you gotta pay the state tax for the Pentax Special order then there's another $800 to $1000 to add to the cost difference between Canon and Pentax versions.

I handled a Pentax 600mm f4 FA ,when a like new used one was available 20 months ago locally, right after Hoya terminated the two local pentax reps. One Rep was called and he passed due to his newly unemployed status.

600mm FA is a crazy huge lens, 5 pounds heavier than Canon's 600mm. I passed on it a few times and bought Two new 5D and new eos glass instead. It took the shop 4 months to sell it.

That 600mm FA sure is a pretty lens though, but insanely overpriced.

So Pentax..er..Hoya is discontinuing even more Pentax lenses.

I have the 16-45...great lens and to compare it to the 17-70...well every mm counts at the W/A range.

When are Pentax going to bring out extreme wide angles..like a 10-20 at a reasonable cost. In Canada the 12-24 Pentax goes for $ 1299 CAD...ridiculous considering that a few years ago it was $ 700 CAD.

Or telephoto prime like Canon's F5.6 400 mm for the nature photographer.

Choices I have are Sigma, Pentax 300mm F 4...that's all folks.

Funny, just this summer I bought a mint-in-box one from henrys on ebay for under $500 buy-it-now - wonder if they still would list it for that much, haha.

Wow...nice

Yep, I think it'll be dual system for me eventually...though probably Nikon instead of Canon because they seem to have more rich owners who dump old lenses like crazy when the latest/greatest comes out
