With the K-x, Pentax did everything just right - both design and features, so they deserve the success.

Well, they say 5th in Japan in Nov.

But #3, #4 and #5 are all very close in market share so let's say that K-x is one of the five top dogs in Japan (Nov).

I am wondering what K-x outselling the Sony A500 means to Sony's strategy to share their sensors with the competition ...

K-x is already on Firmware revision1 and hadn't hit the shops here in Portugal yet.
Not even a sample to play with.

On the other hand, Sony not selling the sensor to Pentax doesn't mean that it will be a Sony dslr that sells instead. Also, Sony playing games with sensor sales may result in sensor competitors like Samsung and Kodak getting more business. Tricky decision to make :-)

Well it's just as usual, Sony and Nikon cameras get the Sony sensor in exclusivity for almost one year before others (Pentax in this case) can use'em.
This is why Pentax has always lagged behind Nikon (and now Pentax) will again if they don't find another consistent good enough sensor manufacturer.

@ Thibs : Sensor will become less and less critical for cameras. Pixel count is around a threshold (the size is enough for 99 % of applications)

The current trend is to insist on iso performance and image dynamic. next year, it might be color accuraty (which is different from white balance)

But, if you look closer the heaviest trend is with other features than sensor related : 100% pentaprism, better metering, better autofocus, weather sealing, magnesium aloy body....

So saying that Pentax will always lag behind because Nikon and Sony will have access to the sensor at least one before is not accurate.

Regards,
Guillaume

I was speaking solely on sensor features/performance and responding to a post concerning sensors.
The istD was late because of that, the K10 was late (and only 2way sensor instead of 4way in the D200) because of that, same for KX (its sensor is more than a year old). They had to work with Samsung to get something to put into their cameras other than the old 10MP Sony CCD.
