Not for me

The only reason I have held on to my Canon gear is because I occasionally shoot with the 400/5.6. It is a very good lens, and it is quite easy to hand hold. However, I do not really do much long range photography any longer, and would rather look at filling out my Pentax kit w/ the primes. As one gets older, lugging around weight becomes less and less attractive. There are a lot of folks that want this size of a lens, but for me, its a younger man's game.

It sounds more and more like the sigma 100-300 will be my first and last tele, and i better get used to the max reach of 420 with a TC. I am not going to pay over 2.5k for a tele, and if I do, I want a substantial improvement. It looks like these two are mutually exclusive. Also, I've maxed out with the weight and size with the Sigma. The only way to go longer is to switch brands so I can get some professional grade 2X and even 1.4 X TC that are so readily available for Nikon and Canon. But, I am not going to give up my Pentax primes, so it is sigma 100-300 forever.......

@Oren, if you are considering the 300/2.8, and you mentioned Canon, I would look into Canikon's wonderful TC's that they make and the professional grade kenkos. Pentax has nothing like that.............
Sanjeevan, I really only made that comment out of frustration I think because for me trying to figure out two systems at this point wouldn't be prudent. I am taking a serious look at the Sigma 300/2.8 though as I do have the 70-200/2.8 covered unless a Pentax pops up in a couple months in the same price range. The reports of its preformance are very good from what I have seen.

I do love my 100-300 however and I purchased another Sigma 2x TC that I am going to give another go at today. I have about another good month of eagles on the Skagit and darn it!, I want some good shots from up there. Hopefully I will run into some Trumpeter Swans today also.

If Pentax announces what it is doing for supertele by that time I may hold out depending on what it is. ( fingers crossed )

As for the Canikon's TC's, it really is sad that Pentax hasn't came through yet. And I wish Kenko would at least release a pro-grade for us.

BTW, Merry Christmas all and may the new year bring joy and peace.

On another note: somebody can take me out and shoot me anytime now.
I purchase the Tamron DI macro that I will be testing today also.
It never ends.....

If it truly is a 400mm would he be holding it like that. Where's the tripod collar?

Complete fakery I tell you.

Apparently not if you consider the versatility of the 80-400 range. Expecially the MkII is what many want for that range if they are not true "prime shooters"

Given the way the road map is drawn, a DA 300mm f2.8 would be more likely. Otherwise why would they draw the line through the 300mm at the top down to the bottom of the page?

Maybe this thread should be locked? Just to prevent the Pentax is too slow developing lenses crowd from getting excited and trolling.

But would a 400mm f4 be worthwhile with the DFA 150-450 f4.5-5.6?

No. Given Pentax's extremely limited resources and the fact that they have other holes in their lens lineup (or lenses that require updating) I can't imagine a DFA* 400/4 would make sense. If for some reason Pentax had a desire to create a long tele I think a 500mm fresnel lens would be the way to go.

I do shoot a 400/4 - the Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 400mm f/4 LD IF 65B - and it is sharp even wide open. The sharpness and speed make it excellent for photographing swans on a gray, foggy morning...

I have 300mm, 400mm, 500mm, and 600mm lenses, and 400mm is my favorite focal length.

I assume this is a joke, but I don't get it, sorry. The only thing I've seen fresnel lenses on is lighthouses.

Great shot!

I'm quite happy with the sharpness of the DFA 150-450 wide open.

I put the HD DA TC on the lens today, but that really underscores the need for more light! It's really hard to use that combination without a tripod.

Move on, people. Nothing to see here.

No, it is not. Both Canon and Nikon sell telephoto lenses that include a Fresnel element. They are lighter than their conventional counterparts. Look for 'DO' (Diffractive Optics) lenses in Canon's portfolio and 'PF' (Phase Fresnel) lenses in Nikon's.
