netuser,
The Sigma is around $3000 and if you can find the Pentax I think it runs real close to that figure also. There is a Pentax on ebay right now that is selling for 3500 but that is a little high IMO.

ghelary,
My firgure for a 300/2.8 might be a little low but I think Pentax can bring it in around that. That would be double the price of the 300/4 so it makes sense. I usaully don't get caught up in speculation but one can hope.

I personally would like to see a 300/2.8.
I think the Sigma is going to be my next purchase but I am going to have to sell my 100-300 to help fund it.
I am thinking with a 300/2.8 I will also have a 420/4 and 600/5.6.
I will probably never be able to afford a 600/4 and Pentax knows that is the same with most folks. So a release of a 400/4 or 5.6 is more realistic.
That was my thinking with why I splurged for the 300/2.8 instead of the 100-300/4 before I went on Safari; and given the price increases that occurred this year boy am I happy I did! [paid around $2300 for mine new @ the end of 2007]. However, I still have a big hole in my lens focal length range, and there are many times I wish I had the 100-300/4. If things were different for me financially I'd make you an offer!

BTW, there is [was? dunno if it's been sold] an old 6x7 600/4 at Adorama for [imo] a very reasonable price. So if you are willing to forgo AF and deal with the CA of the old uncorrected glass, your wish could come true.

netuser, go to Adorama's site and check prices. They had both a FA* 300/2.8 and Sigma 300/2.8 when I was there a few weeks ago [used]. If you don't see them listed, e-mail them. I didn't find everything listed that I saw when I was there.

Oh my... You must not have every clicked my "Tanzania" link in my sig. All pictures from Ngorongoro Crater on thru Serengeti (of which I still have a few thousand RAWs to go thru and convert to JPG, host & share) were taken with the 2x TC attached. ....from post #28 on: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/post-your-photos/10724-m8o-tanzania-07-a-2.html

Numerous reasons. I only got my D-SLR in June of 2007 and was going on Safari in August. Tho I researched cameras extensively before my purchase, I didn't do one stitch of research on lenses before hand. So I had a lot of learning to do of what I might need. The few weeks I had to gear-up didn't leave me enough time to start w/a used FA*, whether 300mm or the 80-200 zoom... (and there were no 300/2.8's on the market during that time) let alone the risk of getting something used that had a problem.

Then also, Sigma was having production delays. They re-tool their operation to make a series of lenses in a particular mount, then move onto another; and in 2007 Pentax was very low on their priority list (probably the same still tho). There were no 100-300/4 zooms to be had in the USA. There was one sitting at Sigma USA, and a kind woman in marketing let me know if I went to Cameta I could put a special order in for it. I did so, but Cameta sat on my $500 down-payment 1 week before literally calling down the street [I, Cameta, and Sigma USA are all on Long Island] and ordered it. By then it was gone. I was both livid and dismayed as it was only a week or two before I was leaving for my epic journey. The kind young woman in marketing must have took pity on me [or felt a bit of guilt in mentioning I could get the 100-300/4 by going thru Cameta, and then Cameta screwed me by delaying the order] because - after sort of talking me into the 300/2.8 - she set-up a special direct purchase thru 47th St Photo for me. ... and that's why & how I got it.

I admit I am an amature.... but why? As long as you always use the lens-hood and use the len-hood velcro'ed cover, there's little risk of something hitting the front element IMO. Plus I'm very skeptical of such a large diameter filter being as uniform as a smaller rear drop-in; let alone filters are thin so more likely to crack from impact when the diameter is large which could actually create more damage to the front element than whatever may have gotten down the hood and hit the filter (think broomstick or branch which would likely leave no mark on the front-element, but cracked edge of the filter's glass very well may if pushed/forced into the glass).

Since I live and shoot mainly in the Azores Islands that means lots of wind and sometimes some sea spray. that's why I always use HOYA pro1 uv filters on the lenses and one of the cares to them

Gotch'ya! The DA* makes the most sense then ... but I bet this possible 400'll be rear drop-in filter too, and might not leave enough length on the front lip for a filter either.
