Can you ask the Pentax peeps to stop obsessing with sharpness at the cost of other attributes (a la the Zeiss F lenses) and can you also tell them that people aren't looking for '35mm equivalent' focal lengths? People want an 80-200/2.8 not a 50-135/2.8! (But these will do for now.)
Totally aggree here with you, Sean!

It seems these Da* zooms are taking forever to be released ... No news on Da* 55 mm or even Da* 200/300...

Add my voice to that list as well. Pentax, are you listening? In some cases, particularly on the wide end, 35mm equivilants are necessary. But at telephoto? I want a DA* 70-200! A 100-400 would be very nice as well...

They have a DA 17-70 and 55-300 in the works for next year which is more than enough to make anyone happy. In the DA* series they will have a longer zoom 60-250 to be exact so it's not like they aren't trying to make things, it just takes time as I can see after playing with the pre-production models and hearing the possible changes they are waiting to make things perfect before they make a mistake and ship early and find errors in the build or manufacturing end and miss what we as photographers need.

I'd rather have available 9 lenses of super high quality covering a vast array of focal lengths than a couple of not so wonderful all-around stuff filling the shelves. The 16-50 makes an awesome walk-around kit lens and the 50-135 makes for another great walk-around lens, you just need to know what focal range fits your style better. I wish I had either lens at my photoshoot the day before I got to play with them because I switched lenses like a mad-man to get the desired effect.

Heck I'd sell everything in my bag to have the range of the first two new lenses coming out, not too mention the ability of SDM which is NUTS!

Plus a DA* 300 and 200mm lens available hopefully by the end of this year will make mt the worlds happiest little boy because I want a true prime telephoto with low aperture and they both have that and SDM!

Let's just wait to see what changes they can make to an already good design and end up with equipment far from the competition.

Canikon + comparable lens = K10D + either DA* lens + Battery Grip + Extra Battery + 4 gigs of SD + af360 flash or K10D + both DA* lenses.

If Pentax is reading, add my voice to Sean and Roentarre for a true 80-200 f2.8

Ned Bunnell posted pictures of this lens, including that, back in February. My guess is that part hasn't changed much:

You can add my voice to the gang that wants a true 70/80-200/2.8, I just don't know what I'd do with that 50-135mm. It looks to be a great portrait zoom range but that's not so helpful when I already have the FA50 and FA77 primes taking care of the portraiture. Using my Sigma 70-200, most of the time I shoot between 140mm and 200mm with more shots towards the 200mm end, so this 50-135 clearly won't do for me.

Either way, LBA will make me buy the lens anyway to see whether it fits anywhere in my shooting.

I've played with both those lenses as well, both very early pre-production samples on a prototype K10D carried by a rep, can't wait for the DA16-50!

Cheers,
-Asad

Why do these lenses have a AF/MF switch on them? Can't the one on the camera body be used to do the same thing?

Neither lens interests me in the least. 135 is too short. For the rest will use the 31 & 77. More interested in a 200 macro and 400 prime (or bigger). Ask them about the 645D. Have fun playing with all that glass.
thanks

Will they admit to even having the slightest knowledge if firmware 1.30 will have more tweaks, menu features, or improvements OTHER than only SDM compatability?

correct me if I'm wrong, so the AF/MF switch on the lens overwrites the setting in the camera?

Exactly.

If you have the camera set to AF and the lens set to AF you get AF, if you set the the lens to MF and the body is still set to AF everything is MF. I guess it's just a button to turn off the internal motor and when the camera notices that it's off then it changes to MF mode. It makes things a lot faster since it's about the area you'd rest your hand on the lens and close enough to move a finder over to it and pull it back. Not too mention it has the quick focus system where even if the camera locks focus you can adjust manually just by moving the focusing ring.

They perform very well on my K10 and the K100 since my firmware still makes it use the ole school in camera motor. I'd say faster than my Tamron 28-75 2.8 but I have no real teasting methods besides relative time.

Can you see if they perform better optically than the Tokina? Particularly, does the 16-50 have the same CA problems?

I cannot test the CA's even though the images I have seen don't show any in the back lit images I took, but it wasn't really a good test. The zoom ranges are what they come up with and I have told the rep and with numerous phone calls and emails about suggestions to make normal lenses not adapt to sensor focal lengths but they are really for bringing those tried and true focal lengths to digital and splash a few others on the side so if we want change it's going to have to be collective emails and phone calls so they know it's what we want.

Nope and the rep is very good and running around some of my questions but others he will spend all day on and give me a written essay about it lol. All I know for certain is that the firmware in the demo camera is 0.60 beta basically it's 1.20 with SDM support as far as I can tell from digging in all the menus and looking at stuff as deeply as I'm allowed to. If Pentax is reading this no rules have been broken I promise. I will have a chance to talk to the rep again on Monday before he leaves for the next city with lenses and camera in toe so I'll get as much out of him as possible for everyone.
