Pentax in Popular Photography Jan. 2010 issue

In the issue I received Dec. 12:
•Pages 10-11 have a photo made with Pentax's 15 mm f4 imited on the K20D, handheld, 1/15, f.4, ISO 1600.

•That photo's caption refers to a report on the test of the lens, which is on pages 88 and 116. The headline is "Pentax Makes Big Waves With A Very Little Ultrawide".

• On page 34, Sal Murillo of Gilroy, Calif., reports using "a venerable Pentax K1000" in 2004 when photographing at Fort Ord. Murillo gives tips for use when exploring abandoned sites.

• On page 42, an illustration and text refer to ability to "choose JPEG presets that can adult overall image characteristics" with Image Finishing Tones, using an icon on the K-7's four-way controller.

•The magazine's back cover has a full page ad for the K-x.

IMHO I would not call the 86° 15mm an Ultra-Wide on the Pentax DSLRs since I use a 10-24mm Tamron with 109° FOV @10mm and 180° 6.5mm Opteka on my K-7. And the 12-24mm Sigma has 122° FOV on a FF DSLR . I think 86° FOV should be called super-wide just like 22.5mm on a FF camera.

Most of the time, wider than 24mm (24x36ŕ is called ultra wide.

I've been curious about the 6.5mm in your gear list

I've been curious about the 6.5mm in your gear list. Does it vignette in the corners on aps-c?

For me, I feel anything at 24mm or wider is ultrawide, but only on 24x36 format. My pentax mount Tamron 14mm 2.8 gives me that ultrawide perspective on K20D as 21mm is pretty darn wide on aps-c.

Yes, it seems like 1) Pentax is finally starting to dump some money into advertising, and 2) pentax is finally starting to get noticed and draw some attention in the magazines.

The likelihood that these two things are connected is more thatn slightly disturbing. Objective journalism my ass.

But never the less, that how things work, and it's good that they have started 'playing the game'. I think they have had 4 back covers on Pop Photo in the last 5 months. Two for k-7, and 2for K-x. They've been getting more reviews, moreproduct placement in the mags, and are generating more buzz. I think things are going well for Pentax. When the 645d comes out, no one will be able to ignore it.

I picked up that issue in Walmart the other day as I needed some new bathroom reading material. They gave a pretty good review of the DA 15 ltd. How objective any review is is always a metter of opinion. I bought the magazine mostly because I hardly ever see a photo mag around anywhere.

The 6.5mm does not vignette in the corners with my K-7. I also have the 15mm F2.8 Sigma FF fisheye AF K mount lens that works more like a super wide angle.

Now I'm imagining an entire Facebook type site for people to only update while for some reason needing to be plugged in while on the can.

Call it like, 'Arsebook,' Or... **itter.

Jump ball for any enterpreneurial spirit that wants to try building it. Happy Solstice.
