I reckon we at least need a thread with similar title but with number 2011 in it. For sake of completeness, that is.

Here's the 2011 full frame thread

I don't expect full frame k mount till 2013, the 10th anniversary of Pentax istD*

Pentax could start Full Frame K Mount in Fall of 2013 at what istD* launched at in 2003. Wasn't that $1,900 US Dollars?

Here's the 2011 full frame thread:

No, its all good fun

No, its all good fun. If a photographer absolutely needs full frame then he or she's likely already bought a Nikon or Canon.

I'd like to see:

K-x Sony "D300" sensor installed in a K20D sized dslr with all the K-7 features but at a K10D launch price. But thats me and my wishlist.

Full frame K-mount has existed since 1975, and it has even been used on all Pentax DSLR.

More idle speculation.

No one really knows anything for sure about whether or not Pentax will have a FF...do they.

Agreed, otherwise by Jan 1st 2010, we'll be planning Medium Format for 2016...oh wait...

Yeah, we at least need some obscure eastern European forum reference (or preferably Russia) to provide a spark. But all the sparks start somewhere. Give it an hour or two, and this thread will be referenced on dpreview.

No they dont, but as long as there are speculation threads, others can start speculative threads about those speculators, and so on and so on!

Technology comes and goes, but it is uncommon for a company's corporate culture and market position to change. One exception to this was when Canon EOS overtook Nikon as the leading 35mm brand among professionals. For the most part, though, that sort of shift doesn't happen.

Pentax, having lost their 35mm market position in the 1960s, concentrated on medium format. They made a system which was competitive with Hasselblad, Mamiya and the rest in terms if IQ, but with ergonomics which were more comfortable for the person used to 35mm and produced at a price point which was far enough below the other MF brands to attract people upgrading from 35mm.

Everything Pentax has said, so far as I know (which, granted, isn't much), indicates that they will follow the same course in digital, i.e., seek out the same market niche. The 645D will not be a sports camera but it will beat the pants off the image quality of anything from Canon or Nikon at a price point which is well below anything from the MF brands with the possible exception of Mamiya. That's been their niche since 1970.

I know that everyone here already knows all this. What surprises me is that so many of you expect it to be different.

Did you see this comparision between 5D Mark II & Two medium format dslrs?

Did you see this comparision between 5D Mark II & Two medium format dslrs?

For 11% the cost of Hassy the Canon 5D Mark II holds up real well:

$2,699 versus $25,337 leaves alot of spare change for lenses and other gear.

Pentax 645D will also use Kodak sensor so should we expect more from it over others who already use same family of medium format kodak sensors?

Compare cameras

Handy link to $25,195 Hassy in above comparision, plus $142 delivery:

And another link, this one for the 50mp kodak sensor installed in the Hassy:

I agree with you, and in another post said that I think Pentax is making a mistake if that is indeed their development direction. Also I'm aware that a number of MF shooters have changed to FF Canon bodies. However, I still think it looks like that's what Pentax's direction is, right or wrong. As sensor development reaches maturity and the pixel packers have done their best, a chip which is 2.7 times larger will deliver commensurately better images, but it would take a dramatic drop in the cost of large sensors to make it practical.
