@Eruditass thanks for succinctly pointing out the lens differences.

Thanks,
Sam
It should be pointed out that the 55-300 in this kit is not the same as that reviewed in the database. The one in the kit has a plastic mount, no hood and (supposedly) no lens coating. Optically they should be the same and the one in the kit is still a bargain.

That's the first I've heard of no lens coating - any links?

The other differences are lack of quick-shift and distance markings. The 50-200mm kit version is also not the same - it has the same things missing.

That's just something I heard or read, that's why I didn't state it categorically.
Thinking about it, there is no reason for them not to coat them unless they're just being cheap mo fo's.
QS would be no biggie for me, I MF most of the 99% of the time anyway.

I just brought up the differences because I'm imagining a lot of confusion in the marketplace at some point, hope I'm wrong.

I find NO coating very unlikely.

Cheaper coating on the other hand is a possibilty.

The sweet price is no longer available on amazon, but a quick search on price watch for pentax k-x kit shows that best buy offers the 2 lens k-x kit for $674.

PENTAX - K-x 12.4-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera 2-Lens Kit - Black - K-x with 18-55mm & 50-200mm Lenses

Seems like a pretty good deal.

Pentax K-x 12.4 MP Digital SLR with 2.7-inch LCD and 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL and 50-200mm f/4-5.6 ED Lenses (Black) is available at Amazon for 641.56 $. The Pentax K-x including the kit lens 55-300 mm deal is gone, for now at least.

I think that is what I meant to say in the first place. But how expensive is a coating, it can't cost much?

Not unlikely, but completely untrue. Even the DA L is an SMC lens, and we all know what SMC stands for
Besides, they would be mad to make an uncoated lens, it's not something they could get by with. I'm surprised this "rumor" made it on this forum, would we believe that easily all sort of negative things about the brand we're using?

About cheaper coatings - afaik, the coating itself is only one part of the equation. The optic design itself must be done in a proper way, for better flare resistance; that's why you can't just put your latest coating on a kit lens and claim it's ghostless smc.
Right now, their best coating should be the Aero Bright on the 55mm. No other lens has it, as far as I know...

My camera

Ordered from Amazon on Jan 5, and received on Jan 20th.
When ordering they stated the it would me 2 months for the camera.
Price was $644 and I got the free shipping to boot.
This is the body, 18-55 mm, along with 55-300 mm lenses.

I couldn't imagine owning a Pentax lens that doesn't have the quick shift focusing.

I was looking at buying a DA 18-55 form Adorama, but I'm a bit concerned that I might get sent an awful DA L instead. They are so similar I can see things getting mucked up a lot from the distributors.

I'm also wondering if there will be a WR version eventually?

Deal? Check the shipping costs.

From what I gathered it is $9.98/ pound to ship to Canada and the item is noted to weigh 5 pounds. The shipper is UPS so there will be brokerage/duty/bond fees. That's going to be costly. Well over $100 for an item of this value.

brokerage fee list

Rough estimates on the $702 US (Camera + shipping) = $760 Canadian. Add brokerage fees (?), taxes (13%) and this shiny deal is looking a bit tarnished.

Just a thought, would Pentax Canada honour a US purchased camera or would it have to be returned to the US for any warranty work?

Not trying to be a wet blanket but just making fellow Ontarians aware of the actual costs.
