Pentax Prediction 2010

I doubt Pentax announces anything at CES. At PMA this year they may announce the drop date of the 645d and the new 100mm macro. They'll also launch PnS cameras but nothing big in the way of SLR/lenses.

Photokina in September Pentax launches 2-3 lenses, I'm (wishfully) thinking a 200-400 f/2.8 or f/4 and something like an 11-16 DA* and an all new FA* lens out of the blue to create buzz about a FF to be launched at PMA 2011 . They may also announce updates to their flashes units. I don't think any new SLR bodies will be announced this year.

I am probably way off on these predictions but PMA is coming close and so I figured this would be as good time as any to start the rumor train rolling for March.

I would guess there will definitely be a new high end body, whether a K7 replacement or compliment; As long as the K-x sells well they can probably ride it through 2010 since it is pretty much alittle over 2 months old (though there will likely be a new replacement at least announced by years end).

I don't expect the higher end body soon, probably not until about the same time as the K-x this year (Oct, announced late summer). This would actually be out of line with their usual 2 bodies a year release schedule. They definitely wont go an entire year without a new body - in terms of technology improvements that would simply put them wayyyy behind the curve, and squarely in the irrelevant column (definitely not the column they are currently occupying!)

Good wishes, though I don't see the telezoom coming through...
The other predictions, believable.

Ok, let's play (by the way, the new 100 macro WR in in the hand of costumeres right now, lurchlarson).

1) PMA: DA17-70/4 WR, DA55-300/-5,8 WR; anticipation of DA*400/4 (under glass); K-7 titanium special edition
2) around June: Pentax Optio-W Super (APS-C-fixed 24-50/4 water and shock proof quality compact camera)
3) Photokina: 645D, DFA65 55/2,8; DFA645 24-48/4
4) Late November: K-5 (APS-C 12MP 12800ISO 7 fps full HD video)

Nothing stopping them from showing off 645D under glass

Nothing stopping them from showing off 645D under glass at CES.

Whether 645D is ready or not, priced or not, the allure of free advertising would be foolish to pass on.

The first new body this year will be 645D. It will come with 2 lenses (normal and wide), and probably more glass later in the year (portrait and macro).

We will see DA 55-300 WR and DA 12-24 WR soon - available in Q2.
Same with roadmapped DA Supertelephoto, but it won't be DA* 400/4, more likely DA 100-400 F5.6.
We may get a DA* ultra-wide as well, but somehow I don't it will be 11-16/2.8 - no more Tokina designs will be used.

K-7 succesor in Q3, same body with new sensor and some tweaks.

I hope for high end weather-sealed compact...

Is it reliable information that you have or just expectations ?

I would doubt of a "DA" 100-400/5.6, it would more be DA* or at least WR. The concept would be great however.

Just my guesses, expectations and hopes. I thought that's what this thread is about?

Wrt Supertelephoto - WR would be great, DA* even better. I just think that F5.6 zoom is way more likely to happen than a fast prime.

I hope for:
a) 11-16 DA WR with a reasonable price tag in the UK
b) K300D, K-y WR, K-5 WR- in short, a WR successor for K200D; a K-7x whatever that means would be fine too
c) Announcing they get onboard the Samsung NX platform and producing a smaller, better, WR alternative to NX10 to not miss the EVIL opportunities
d) Fixing the UK lens prices, e.g. for the 12-24
e) Firmware option to turn off SDM for all cameras, old and new; preferably also SDM recalls and an announcement they have fixed the issue

I actually expect:
a) 645D with a few lenses, obviously
b) K-7 successor with a different sensor but everything else much the same later in the year
c) DA17-70 WR, DA55-300 WR
d) More price hikes for lenses

Not sure where I stand regarding FF. I'd like them to have it, but they obviously are already comitted to MF and k-mount APSC, I think EVIL is where the future is, and they probably cannot even do three, never mind four platforms at once.

I would expect the sequel to the K7 to be announced at the end of the summer, shipping in the fall. As far as lenses, I have no idea. If the goal is just to weather seal existing lenses, you would think Pentax would have finished that project already and released them on the market. I mean, they had all last year with the only new lens design being the DA 15. I would think there would be one or two new lenses released -- maybe hinting at coming full frame in 2011...

Of course not as this will kill the current sales of the K-7 instantly.
