That image is admittedly a fake--they should start embedding "fake" in images, knowing how they get tossed around...

Probably not. The 645N II is 147 x 109 x 117 mm and weighs 1280 g without batteries, the S2 is 160 x 120 x 80 mm and weighs 1410 g with battery.

So, if we assume the 645D is similar to the 645NII, what happens if you mount a lens?

If you mount the 75/2.8 on the Pentax and the 70/2.5 on the S2, the Pentax is suddenly much smaller in all respects: The depth grows to 154.5 and the weight grows a mere 215 g to 1495 g, while the S2 grows to a depth of 173 mm and a total weight of 2150 g! So you can add a wide Pentax zoom and have a flexible two lens kit and still stay below the weight of a single-lens kit S2 :-)
Size might be about the same (after all, they have to keep the mount to sensor distance the same, so they can't change it too much), but it'll probably be heavier than the 645N--how many digital bodies are smaller and lighter than their film counterparts?

Aye. Well, the purpose of that website is to generate ad revenue via site visits, and, as many newspapers found out, nothing sells like giving the masses what they want, truth be damned.

The rumour isn't that the 645D will be announced in March 2010 (that's been mentioned by several Pentax bosses a number of times) but that its price will be $6,500.

Now, I have yet to read any official statement from Pentax saying that the 645D will be sold anywhere outside Japan; so far I've only read "Japan only". While we could still buy one on eBay, I'm not sure what the warranty and support situation would be outside Japan, and this might put a lot of potential buyers off. If Pentax change their minds and go for a Worldwide release, this will become a moot point, but then I have to question the price.

If the 645D ends up selling for $6,500 (and really, it should be $6,450, no? ), I will fall off my chair, and probably not be able to get up for a few days.

I've always said that wasting valuable (and ever-dwindling) resources on the 645D was a mistake, so I'll be happy if they simply manage to recover R&D costs.

Probably a lot of whether or not they try for wider distribution depends on the reception they get in Japan. Apparently the medium format market there is very big for the size of their market, whereas it's not so big in the US in comparison.

If only Pentax brought back this long lost prototype from many years ago to ring in the EVIL line.

I wonder if that was a real prototype or just a design concept?

Maybe. The *ist D is much heavier than the *ist (but the MZ-S on the other hand weighs more than 500g). I don't think it needs to be much heavier, we'll see!

I think this is the equivalent of an electric concept car at an automobile trade show: Everyone likes it and knows it makes sense...but everyone also knows it will never see the light of day

There have never been an official statement from Pentax that the 645D was for Japan only. That was comment from an US Pentax rep saying they only could sell 200 units ion the US.
That the camera might be first sold in Japan is not impossible or uncommon....

John Carlson is more than "just a Pentax rep"

John Carlson is more than "just a Pentax rep".

In a March 2009 interview he said they'll be NO 645D for USA market, also known as "JCPentax", John Carlson is the "Product marketing and Support manager at Pentax USA":

PMA: Pentax revives medium format digital camera plan (update) news - Amateur Photographer - news, camera reviews, lens reviews, camera equipment guides, photography courses, competitions, photography forums

Wednesday 4th March 2009
Chris Cheesman
Pentax has revived plans to launch its long-awaited 645 Digital medium-format camera, four years after a mock-up was first shown.

The camera will go on display at the Photo Imaging Expo show in Tokyo later this month, said John Carlson, product marketing and support manager at Pentax USA.

He told Amateur Photographer that the 645 Digital is expected to go on sale in Japan.

However, it is unclear whether the camera will be sold in Europe.

And Carlson told us that it will not be marketed in the United States because Pentax predicted it would only sell 200 units there.

We understand that Pentax Japan has decided to aim the camera at the high-end market, so it seems unlikely it will be an affordable, enthusiast-level, model.

Last year, Pentax appeared to have scrapped development of the camera.

A press report in Japan had suggested that 'developments of the new camera body introduced on various occasions, as well as the SMC Pentax-D FA645 55mm f/2.8 will be virtually discontinued'.

Only a dummy version of the camera has been shown to journalists - paraded at numerous trade shows since it was first mooted at Tokyo's Photo Imaging Expo show in March 2005.

At the time of writing, no-one from Pentax Europe was available for comment at PMA.

Interesting discussion so far.
The sample images in the first post are obviously PS jobs (even indicated as such by the poster of the rumour) but the concepts aren't too far fetched.
Certainly a different direction from the traditional 'bread and butter' dSLR stuff.
I just wouldn't want Pentax to lose focus from bettering their dSLR gear, particularly lens development (yes, SDM again, but also that longer telezoom and DA* prime), P-TTL consistency and AF performance in low-light.

If the price is reasonable, they'll sell 200 units on pre-order already. If this camera is in the same weight/price range as the 645N II, and the new lenses are reasonably priced, I wouldn't be surprised at all if this camera fares very well with advanced amateurs outside of Japan, too.

I think it will depend somewhat on how easy the processing is. If you get almost-ready-to-use RAW files (that don't require extensive noise processing in PP as I understand some MF backs do) or even JPEGs out of it, I think it will be a much less demanding step than going from 35 mm to 120 mm film was.

(And, just thinking loud: What if they've made a new weather resistant zoom lens, and sell it as a zoom kit? A one-step entry into the digital MF world? They've already said that they have several new lenses ready...)

That is a Pentax rep in my book and he probably know less about the digital 645, particularly last spring, than we do.....
