Ouch.

I think all companies are reconsidering participation in trade shows. Maybe it is not such a bad thing.

For a hundredth of what CES costs, Ned Bunnell could fly to DPReview's offices with a 645D prototype and get as much press.
Blogs and discussion groups like this have changed the economics of marketing. Going to trade shows doesn't always make sense, especially with limited marketing dollars.
Besides, don't you want Pentax to save up for their Super Bowl commercial???

So if I understand they are at CES not to sell BUT to buy Blog entries instead!

As for Mr. Ned Bunnell flight I think he might better take a fully working production 645D instead of a prototype.

Not quite. More like to prevent blog posts along the lines of

"Notable by its absence was Pentax... this does not bode well for this once-thriving company"

In other news, I saw another Stormtrooper-edition K-x being used at CES. I, on the other hand, was taking photos and giving interviews with my K-7.

I went to PDN's Photoplus Expo with BrendanPK (where Pentax was absent) and he was shooting video with his K-7, using a Micropro Lite Panel on the hotshoe. That thing drew a considerably amount of attention. He had a crowd around him asking questions at the Nikon display. It was amazing. Cheap (free) marketing for Pentax.

Thanks for the link, but I think that is to last year's CES.

Seriously, I have googled, I have been to 1001 noisy cameras, I have surfed the Canon, Nikon, and Sony news sites. The Canon sites talk about the Nikon and Sony, Sony sites talk about the Canon and Nikon news, and you bet, the Nikon folks are talking about Canon and Sony.

I can't feed squeek about Pentax.
Pentax will generate some serious buzz at PMA. While they did not show me the new FF nor 645, they did show this one important element: they are going to find a broader appeal amongst retailers which will mean more product in more locations. They added some very bright people to their US headquarters who are genuinely committed to cultivating the brand.

Yes Pentax will have some excellent product to show soon that represents well the culture of Pentax, but more importantly they have people who are capable of driving Pentax in a good direction. I don't think they could have more effectively displayed than they did.

Please don't ask me to reveal what they did show, as there is no force on earth that will make me break NDA. Although to say "Very Cool" is well within the terms of the agreement. I will tell you that the new people they added can be verified and that the best thing they put on display was their people.

Pentax Employees available at CES ?

Pentax Employees available at CES ?

Did anyone actually talk to a Pentax USA or Pentax Europe employee at the CES Show in Las Vegas? Other than the 8"x10" sign I've not read anywhere of anyone who came into contact with Pentax Reps

I live in Las Vegas and attend the CES every year. Found the location listed in the CES guide after a lot of hunting. They had a tiny cubicle/office with a table and an 8" X 10" sign and no one in the office, middle of the afternoon on Saturday. That was all......

Way in the back in South Hall 4, just a little temporary office with a tiny meeting table and a couple of chairs, un-occupied, nobody there.

Neither distributor had a real floor exhibit. They both had tiny meeting rooms in the "meeting place" area. Little "press rooms" I guess, for lack of a better description.

Not all the vendors who showed product over the weekend were in the LVCC. Some showed in hotels. Yes there were Pentax employees. CES is not necessarily a public forum or launching pad for new products. In fact, there are signs posted at the entrances explaining why the attendees must be part of the CE community. Each exhibitor makes a significant investment in attending the show, but not every exhibitor has the same goals. Some just want to have a single location where they can meet with their partners to discuss planning on a retail, distribution or manufacturing level. These sort of meetings are generally not super-duper exciting to the general public like the launching of new technologies, but they are critical for all the participants from the retail level up to the R&D level.

So yes I did meet with my Pentax sales rep to help me plan for advertising, inventory levels and to discuss any issues my store might have where Pentax is involved. Since the store where I work is pretty small, my meeting didn't require a giant booth with a Casino like atmosphere. Does this mean that Pentax has no product they are planning to show soon? NO. They will show when it is right, and the showing will turn heads. Keep your eyes open!

I wouldn't expect camera manufacturers to debut anything new at CES--that's what next month's PMA is for, and even that is iffy. The only thing Pentax revealed last PMA was the X70, and Canon isn't even showing up to this year's convention.

Looks like Yvon Bourque got to chat with some Pentax people at CES:

PENTAX DSLRs: Las Vegas, CES show, Meeting with Pentax, Vegas Neon Sign Graveyard, City Lights, Glass sculptures and the new ARIA hotel.
