DA* 16-50mm out of stock?

The 16-50 seems to have shot up in price on amazon. A few weeks ago it was ~$700 and now its up over $1,000. You can still find it in a kit of stuff on Adorama for $750 but the lens itself is $1,029. B&H is also out of stock. The lens is also out of stock on the Pentax Webstore. Prodigital is selling the lens for $849.

Was there just a sudden upswing in the #of the lenses purchased or has Pentax not made the lens in a while and has let the inventory run low?

Maybe I'm just hoping too hard but could this mean a replacement at PMA?

Probably not but you never know...

maybe wishful thinking on your part?
is out of stock in B&H but still in stock in adorama... shows as 1029 but you see if at 744 when added to the basket (as it has been for quite some time).... is in stock via amazon, not directly but through a 3rd party.

Lens is easily worth 744$ so part with thecash and enjoy a great lens... probability of getting a good lens is in your favour

I guess the thing that I find the most interesting is that the lens is out of stock through pentax's own website.

I have noticed a significant price increase over the past 6-8 months. A Canon shooter friend of mine was complaining about this as he said the Canon prices have shot up as well. Does anyone know what going on with that? We just got the 16-50 and love it more than a new puppy.

Probably to cover the cost of repairing/replacing those lenses with SDM failure.

What he said!

Check out the prices of the new Sigma HSM lenses. The Pentaxes don't look so far out of line now, and they are arguably better in all respects except one (maybe): their (Sigma's) focusing motors are better than Pentax'. Maybe. And oh yeah, in Canada, the Sigmas are warrantied for 10 years.

The SDM problems on the *16-50 cost Pentax yet again one more time, yesterday. Had one in my hand, thought hard about it, and bought a DA 16- 45 instead for 399 bucks Canadian. I have one of the * lenses, and love it, but I just don't need the worry of another. At those prices, the danged things should at least be warrantied for 10 years, like the Sigmas.

I tried getting it here in Bangkok late last year, where it was running about 800USD in September/October. The store advised that, not only were they out of stock (they've got plenty of other Pentax lenses), but there was no stock in the country. They had been advised that when the new stock arrived (about now), it would be priced a little over 1000USD.

I took the international postage hit and got it from Adorama.

Can't get enough of Gary's and PentaxPoke's cynicism.
All the while, I'm enjoying the beauty of the results I get from my own *working* copy.

As a DA* 16-50 owner, I would tell them to not waste too much time with manual-focus training. My single biggest complaint with this lens is the focus throw.

They won't need nightsticks if they have a 16-50 on a K20D with a grip. You could really eff someone up with a strike from that combo.

The prices you see on Amazon that are above $1000 are sold by 3rd parties and not directly by Amazon.

This morning I received a Gold Box offer through Amazon for this lens at $707.70 and don't know whether I should jump on it. They currently don't have it in stock, but at that price it's tempting. I've been observing sold 16-50mm's on eBay and they've been sold anywhere from $610-620 not counting shipping costs.

Is it worth it to pay $700 for brand new? Of course it would be warrantied which you don't get with used copies.

If that's true, then it's a pretty sweet deal for Pentax!
