I'll agree with Mike here. It's a great value, and makes a nice portrait lens to boot.
I have to chime in to the defense of this lens. It's IQ is more than decent, and the size and weight is almost unbelievable for its range. I don't have it myself, but my daughter has it so I use it every now and then (e.g. for the ground squirrel in my PPG).

The 16-45 was the "kit" lens purchased with my 1st dslr, the DS. Love it. Borrowed the 17-70 for a few shots. Nice lens. Didn't make me want to buy it. Don't want to give up the wider end. Now Pentax has lost their inexpensive wider than a kit lens lens. A shame.

Still refuse to buy a SDM lens. To many problems and they don't seem to focus any faster (often slower). They are quiet.

Mine is sharp as a tack, but you are right it doesn't compare to a prime of any given focal length... but neither can most any other zoom, especially at that price point.
I'll also agree with Mike. I have quite a few premium lenses that cover 200mm (Tokina 80-200 AT-X AF2, Tamron SP 80-200/2.8 Adaptall2, A*200/2.8, A70-210/4), and, except for speed, my DA50-200 isn't far behind optically. Due to its diminutive size and weight, it'll always have a place in my lens lineup.

It is a bit of a shame that the DA 16-45/4 is being discontinued because it's such a great value, though the DA17-70/4 has pretty much replaced mine as well. I am also assuming that Pentax is planning to keep the DA-L 50-200 and the DA 50-200 WR.

Indeed. It was used in many stock photos of Pentax bodies -- I always wondered why they didn't just make it the kit lens and blow every other company out of the water for IQ. It's an excellent lens but since buying the DA12-24 I don't use it. That plus the DA43 covers the range.

I was out in the rain yesterday with my 16-45 and wishing that we had something wide and weathersealed. I now have the 18-55 WR, which is nice, but the colour and contrast on the 16-45mm continually surprise me. It's now back on my camera a lot of the time. Weather sealed it would have been a killer - I guess too close to 16-50 2.8.

I was hoping that there would be an optical update with the 50-200 when it came out in WR. Here's hoping that happens in time, but I still definitely delivers the goods as a portrait and travel lens - it's still so light!

I quote from Pentax users magazine (UK Pentax Club). This is probably true.
