Lenses discontinued?

I quote from Pentax users magazine (UK Pentax Club). This is probably true.
QuoteQuote:
PENTAX'S JAPANESE site is reporting that four lenses are to be discontinued. The DA 16-45mm f/4ED AL, wide angle zoom, the DA 50-200mm f/4-5.6ED, telephoto lens, DA 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3ED AL [IF], zoom lens and the FA 600mm f/4ED [IF] telephoto lens are all on the site's list to be discontinued.

Old news for the DA16-45, it's being replaced by the 17-70 which seems a very good lense (and very pratical) according to Photozone.

The replacement of DA50-200 is new for me but not very surprising, kit lenses are not that good and this one may need an upgrade.

Maybe the DA 50-200 was replaced by the WR version? (and the DA L for entry level kits, e.g. K-x)

Correct.

The 18-250 is no longer manufactured by Tamron, so it is discontinued.

The D-FA 50 and D-FA 100 are also discontinued, but for the D-FA 100, there is now the WR D-FA 100.

I had not heard about the FA 600mm. Pity.

Have to take exception with this as regards the 50-200mm. This lens is consistently praised as a superior value for the money.

I believe Pentax just phased out the non WR version in favor of the WR version.

I hope Pentax is replacing it with something worthwhile.

Well I have it, and I was never impressed. I could take decent shots of course but my impression is so-so. Of course my point of comparison is made of primes so I'm certainly biased here.

And anyway I could have had a bad copy

There will be a further telephoto gap that Pentax will have to cover, but it may be an indication for more DAs and DA*s coming through...

Mine is sharp as a tack, but you are right it doesn't compare to a prime of any given focal length... but neither can most any other zoom, especially at that price point.

I trust end user's opinions most. If you read the Owner's Reviews at amazon.com on this lens, you may be less enthusiastic about the 17-70.

I'll agree with Mike here. It's a great value, and makes a nice portrait lens to boot.

I purchased both the 16-45 and 17-70 Pentax lenses at the same time, when the 17-70 was first released, and while both are very nice, I use the 17-70 more often and am well pleased with it. SDM is awesome and super quiet. The images from mine are quite useable and very good at all focal lengths; they look good on my computer display, prints, and internet use. As far as Amazon reviews go, really, there are only 4 there and I don't usually let a few less than positive remarks about a product deprive me of obtaining and enjoying a product...........
