Tokina have stopped making the 16-50mm and 50-135mm in Canon and Nikon mounts so I presume (rather like Tamrons 18-250mm) that Pentax therefore have no way of supplying them now.

Well they wouldn't ... really, any DFA lanses will still work on crop sensors and so service both markets.

Sigma do it quite well and provide both to the market place. And I buy them and they are great.

What I want is for Pentax to bring back the glory days of 'M' Series glass in auto focus, and a killer Full Frame DSLR.

Amd yes, I would buy one.

Sound strange to me. Aren't those DA* lenses manufactured by Pentax?

Perhaps there are replacements in the wings although it strikes me as somewhat early....

Great... so much for my plans for lens expenditures for next fiscal year. I can only hope that if Pentax is going to drop the 50-135, that they don't follow other manufacturers with the 70-200+/- zoom while leaving nothing but the current 17-70 to cover the lower range. If they come up with a DA* 17-70 or the like, then by all means, go for a DA*70-200+/-.

Although I could easily go all-primes for portrait and commercial work, I would find it very difficult to shoot a wedding reception or fast-paced event and having to worry about switching lenses while navigating a busy event.

And forget the 60-250... I shot one wedding with it and had carpal tunnel and a stressed elbow by the time the day was over.

A whole lot of speculation here. If they are going back to the designing board, I doubt it would be for an optical improvement on the 50-135 -- more likely dropping SDM and putting in faster, more durable motors. On the other hand, even if full frame is in the wings, that would not supersede the 16-50 since the majority of cameras that Pentax would continue to sell would be APS-C and a lens that starts at 24-28mm is pretty narrow for a crop frame.

As far as Tokina goes, Pentax owns the patents on both of those lenses as far as I know and they license them. There are whole threads devoted to this relationship, but I certainly wouldn't think that Tokina's actions are related at all to what Pentax does.

If true, it's just another sign of a coming FF as I see it.

We also have the re-issued DFA macro (why making the effort of a complete new exterior design if there were no more DFA in the pipeline?), the missing DA*11-16 (why a pro grade UWA if the crop sensor is not so pro any longer?), the missing DA tele converter and the lack of a fast normal for crop.

Wishful thinking? Sure.
Taken out of thin air? No, I don't think so

Of course they are. But some people like to believe Pentax factories are only for show

Even if pentax was to announce FF camera that would be no reason to discontinue the two DA* lenses and ignore mmajority of it's user base that wil still use APSC for times to come. My guess is they'll release updated version of the two DA stars that were also the first SDM lenses.

That would certainly make sense. It may only be that they aren't shipping currently because they are quietly dealing with fixing the issues with these lenses. At least I hope so.

I doubt it. DFA's would most likely be 28-80 and 80-200. I wouldn't think that Pentax would try to release full frame versions of the 16-50 and 50-135. Would take some major over hauling and they would be half again as big as they are now.

I don't believe the speculation above that since Tokina is no longer going to manufacture their 50-135, that Pentax would run out of them ala Tamron 18-250.

For one thing, the DA 50-135 has WR seals in it that the Tokina does not have, i think this means that it was manufactured by Pentax. The Pentax 18-250 had no such seals and seemed to be identical in all respects to the Tamron version except for the nameplate.

So I think there is reason to be optimistic that Pentax will continue with this fine lens, perhaps after correcting any SDM design problems, if not done already.

I'm concerned that since Hoya took over various lenses have been rumoured to be or going to be discontinued, not long ago the 16-45 was supposed to be going but its still listed as available and is easy to get hold of, also the lack of information coming out about a replcement for the K7, will there be K30D?
And speaking to various reps, they seem to think that Pentax is moving away from camera production and will become more like Sigma and Tamron as a producer of Lenses and accesories.
