I have no idea if what the reps say is true but the lack of denial from Hoya is making me think about even buying a K7 if there not going to replace it.

And speaking to various reps, they seem to think that Pentax is moving away from camera production and will become more like Sigma and Tamron as a producer of Lenses and accesories.
Which "reps" are saying this? Sounds like utter nonsense.

It reminds me of the posts last year about a Ritz Camera employee claiming Pentax was going out of business...just before Ritz Camera declared bankruptcy.

A Canon or a Nikon rep... or maybe Sony... Olympus? Panasonic?
Probably it's just someone talking about point&shoots - which are indeed outsourced and there was some talk about this, some time ago. But of course, Hoya won't kill their DSLR line, that's for sure.

Has anyone bothered to send Pentax an email asking for a comment on the matter?

Wasn't that because they were about a mile deep in the hole to Canon?

I don't remember. I didn't pay too much attention to that stuff.

Pentax needs new SDM. Old has really unreliable performance.

...and is slower than screw drive.

Is SDM really that bad, or are people making this more of an issue than actually exists?

Any AF system works optimally under normal light conditions. I've used Canon, Nikon, Pentax, and Mamiya all under various light conditions, and every single camera and lens I've used exhibited similar characteristics with regards to AF.

Not enough light, extreme low light or low contrast scene? Fuggedaboudit!

Nonsense. It depends on the lens and construction. On a Canon camera the Tokina 50-135 is as slow in terms of focusing as the Pentax 50-135. DA 16-45 has pretty much the same focus speed as DA 17-70 (i.e., they're both pretty quick to move and both are slower than the kit lens).

The only weird thing about it is that it fails while in storage.

Nope. Have you ever noticed that if you compare an SDM lens on a k10d, k20d, and k-7, there is very little difference in focusing speed? but if you put a screwdrive lens on each of the three bodies, the AF speed improves from the k-10d through the k-7?

I am not talking about the limitations of SAFOX here. That is another issue. I am just talking about the rotational speed of the focusing ring. Focus ring speed on SDM lenses seems to be limited by the SDM, but SD lenses speed depend on the body (which have improved). I remember how much "snappier" the k-7 focused my SD lenses, yet the 50-135 was no different on the k-7 than the k10d.

Also, remember Peter Zack's thread?
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/85877-i-broke-...t-happier.html

He said his 16-50 focused faster on SD than SDM. I recall the same thing with my K10d (before I upgraded the firmware.)

Shooter, I assume you are talking about the SDM speed issue, not reliability (which is pretty well documented.) Someone posted these video comparisons that I found interesting:

Thats not my experience at all. I find SDM to be very slow on the K10D, in fact so slow that I suspected a SDM failure, but very fast on the K-7; less than a second to focus.

You made a sweeping statement about SDM. Didn't I say that it depends on the lens and construction? DA 17-70 and DA 16-45 have pretty much the same focus ring travel time--and both are slower than the kit lens (you can find quick tests on youtube).
