is it possible you had a slow/defective copy? I only have seen mine in action so have had no other 50-135s to do a side-by-side.
The one in the video is not my copy. I don't know who's that is. I just know that it behaves the way mine did indoors at night.

You are just blinded by that beautiful new baby you have. Even the most ardent Pentax fan must admit that the 50-135 is a slow focuser. (I seem to remember a post from someone long ago about things that move faster than the 50-135. Like the earths rotation, the seasons, etc.) You are the first person I have ever seen post say that the 50-135 is an "almost instant" focuser. It gets much worse when the lights are low.

I think the only way the 50-135 could be described as "almost instant" is if you were already in focus.

This is the way I remember my 50-135's focusing:

Ii have no intention giving you the wrong info. And no it's not the baby. I will take a video with my point and shoot camera (placing it over the viewfinder of the K7) and will focus from min to infinity and post it shortly. Focusing in almost instant. I will also take a video in low light areaa and show you how focusing works for me.

Fake?

What about these:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Coh5ZI5otoU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-4gCSQc2uI&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8mN2o4Abwk&feature=related (look from 4:40 - this one is somewhat better than the other two, but I wouldn't call it really fast either)

Seems that youtube is full of fake videos

Here you go. I just took this video looking out the balcony. This video shows focusing from min to infinity on a very cloudy day using K7 with DA* 55-135mm. Focus is always instant. i will post post focusing in low light shortly.

2 things you have to take into consideration. The youtube videos you posted do not show what the person is focusing on or what model camera his being used. if focusing on a plain wall out of lack of experience, the person is never going to get a focus. Another thing is what model camera is being used. with K7 I'm getting almost instant focusing in all light conditions.

See that's exactly how mine focuses too. There's a half-second delay between the time I tell it to move, and the time it actually responds. Actual focusing time once it starts moving is pretty quick and accurate, but not necessarily any better than my kit lens (which is just noisier). You've just proven the whole point with that video.

That's true. But for me, these videos still prove that the 50-135 SDM has
a) very long focus throw b) a slowish focus motor.

I don't doubt that the lens might work faster with the K-7, and that there might be better copies, or copies with improved lens FW (why is it that Pentax doesn't make it possible for the users to upgrade the lens FW?).

Are you serious. If you think half a second is too much for focusing, i don't' think you should be living on this planet. This thread is talking about about how the 55-135 takes along time to focus, the videos i posted proves it otherwise both from min to infinity and in very low light.

My guess is that people start complaining after their camera hunts. In the Summer of '08, I received the dim DA 55-300 as a gift (along with the K200D) and it was too easy to make that combination hunt. The loud motor action (EDIT: of K200D with DA 55-300) made the whole experience all too unpleasant.

Here's another fun video:
