New Samyang 14mm f/2.8 Lens for Pentax

A new, fast, wide-angle prime for Pentaxians on a budget. Remember, it's manual focus.

Interesting.

Pro-Optic now has announced a fisheye (manual focus only) for 289.95 $US, available exclusively through Adorama. Source: Shutterbug, March 2010, page 34.

More choices can't be bad.

for AF to work, all camera mounts require some degree of digital control of the lens, and paying the royalties (unless you're Sigma ), so, to keep the lens cost, lens development costs, and avoid paying unnecessary fees, those guys in Samyang decided it'll be manual focus. that way, the only difference between lenses in different mounts is in mount itself, and how is the aperture activation linked to the camera.

They apparently skipped that last one too — there's a review of the Canon version just up on photozone.de, and it notes that turning the aperture dial actually darkens the viewfinder.

The Canon version of their 8mm is like that too, according to the manual, they say the same about the Sony version. I have the Pentax version and it works just like any Pentax "A" lens.

Do you think this site can use wide-angle lenses in right way?
It's funny. They don't know simple rules how to use 14 mm lens.

There's only a review of the 1.4/85mm? I didn't find a review for the 14mm?

AF isn't really necessary when you get that wide IMO.

There are rules? Quick - call the lens police!

Agree with DB about AL/MF - I hardly ever use AF on my DA14mm - its usually MF hyperfocal.

Part of the problem is that they are shooting with a D3x. Still, it seems to have an impressive amount of distortion. Not saying it couldn't be improved with some better photo technique, but I don't think I could tolerate those kinds of lines and angles in a photo.

When you read something stupid like this it makes me wonder if reading a review is worth the effort. Another serious shortcoming: Turning the focus ring can also cause the viewfinder to get blurry!
