For once I agree 100% with Thom Hogan, which is a first!!. Sony's product strategy is utterly incoherent.

Camera companies are not a bunch of magic elves making what our hearts desire in return for gold, they are business and they have to use what resources they have to make products that actually sell.

The FF market is dominated by Nikon and Canon simply because 90% of all professional photographers already use them and have all the accessories.

They are not going to change.

Even so, a Canon rep told me that the Canon 7D was their pivotal enthusiast camera at the time of release. I dont see any sign of Canon reducing their investment in and support of the APSC format because the cost/performance ratio is so good. Even their 1D pro cameras are NOT FF and outsell Nikon by quite a margin.

Pentax believe that they can make a few 645 cameras at a profit, but the market is not Nikon and Canon pros. Its people still hanging on to their old 645 systems because digital replacements are either too expensive or too darn cumbersome - the same rationale for the film 645 which was simpler and far more portable than most of the competition. Personally I think they are wrong, but what do i know? I just hope its not a suicide mission.

2.7 % share of market with K7, and 7.9 % share with Kx. For sure is good being around the 10 %.

With the K10 and K100, Pentax were hitting 10 % world wide. Good seeing them up again.

Looking forward to what new lenses will come out.
As always, hoping they ram this into series production :
K 20/1.4 AL

Thom Hogan is no big fortune teller, (haven’t meet many that could), but on current state of affairs; he is more on home ground. He had some thoughts on Sony in this thread :

I doubt it is a suicide mission. Sounds like their plan involves selling only a few thousand of these cameras at most. Any new algorithims, developments can filter down to other models, so nothing is completely lost any way.

The market is more than that. They've said that they target the advanced amateur market.

Thats hopeful marketing spin, the truth is they want to regain the MF landscape market which the old 645 had largely to itself. That does however mean weaning diehards of their FF Nikons and Canons which is going to be a hard sell.

There is also the MF Mamiya crowd to pitch to.

There's rumors that the 645D could have a street price of $6500 USD. That could make things interesting with its 49 x 36.8 active area sensor (61.3mm diagonal).

of course this one would be even more interesting.

I think 9500 dollars is more likely.

I just noticed that K-7 is at 3th position in Cyberphoto's "Most sold last month" list. Cyberphoto is a quite big DSLR seller in Scandinavia or at least in Sweden and Finland. It is not a big market area, but still it is nice to see that currently they are selling more K-7:s than any Canon models.

Though that's with 450D and 500D split and I guess they have more or less the same category of buyers + two lens options on the 500D.
