Pentax, it's time to up the ante!

With Canon's announcement of the 550D/T2i, I feel Pentax needs to up the ante on the K-x or derivative model.

The 550D/T2i offers full HD 1080p @ 24, and 30fps, and 1280x720p at 60P. Starting to sound a bit like the 7D. Price is $899.00 with the 18-55mm zoom, and it also offers a 1/8" audio input, manual exposure control, and it's also PAL friendly with 25p and 50p. I'm not sure of why they can make a camera so much like thee 7D without the 7D price tag, but they have.

Personally, I could care less about the 1080p as I don't even own an HDTV yet. Besides, Most of my work is done for SD distribution anyway. It would be nice, but is not top on my list. Even Blu-Ray looks awesome with 720p source.

Top list for Pentax:

1. Manual control over shutter, aperture, and ISO individually

2. Audio input with manual level control (not a must have, but would prefer)

3. 24p, 30p, 60p switchable (23.976p, 29.97p, 59.94p) and PAL 25p/50p

4. HDMI or Component output would be nice for external monitoring and focus assist, but the composite is fine. Maybe S-Video???

I know this stuff has probably been posted elsewhere, but with the new Canon coming out on Feb. 24th, 2010, I hope Pentax takes heed.

I love the idea of going Pentax. Canon is too big for their breeches, Nikon can't get it right, and Sony has their heads in the sand. Price per feature, Pentax is the way.I just want a few more features, and am willing to pay a few more dollars to boot.

I guess people care more about video now than taking photos? I can think of at least a half dozen under $1000 cameras off the top of my head that I'd rather use to take photos with then that new Rebel.
  1. Pentax K-7
  2. Pentax K-x
  3. Pentax K20D (if you can find one)
  4. Nikon D90
  5. Canon 50D
  6. Canon 40D
  7. Olympus E-30
  8. Panasonic GF1
I'll stop now.

I like the K-x pretty much the way it is as an entry-level camera. But they should probably put those focus flash points back in the viewfinder. I don't mind but many people do and their absence seems to be the camera's only flaw.

But I understand your point - which is why I hope everything you're asking for - along with weatherproofing and more body-mounted control dials (as opposed to menu items) will be included in a replacement for the K200D. Such a camera would slot nicely between the K-x and the K-7.

And, yes, I think Pentax should have at least three DSLR lines: entry-level, mid-line and top-tier/prosumer. Medium format would be above the K-7, of course.

Narrow DOF video pornography seems interesting.

Ah. I should have guessed that porn drives this new technology too (just like it did with Super 8 movies, VHS casettes and the Internet)

Video on DSLR's are waaaay overrated and means completely nothing to me. If you really want video that bad then go Canon; the price of the new T2i will hopefully lessen the video whines and complaints on this forum. But for me, I'm here to take photos out of this piece of technology called the DSLR.

What it does is establish a baseline for what is acceptable for "video support" for a DSLR (much like the stupid "I need a physical button labelled ISO on the camera instead of figuring out that I can hold the OK button and flip the front dial" :-)

What was interesting to me is you can control the Rebel's output via HDMI using your TV's remote...no one has done that yet.
And the eye-fi menu on the camera itself which opens up all sorts of possibilities for adding wireless tethering if they want to push it that way.

Just think...wireless low DOF pr0n controlled w/ your TV remote! I'll take ten of them :-)

I really think that Canon drives the low end market too hard. It's just getting stupid. Camera technology is gneral is just getting stupid. And I'm saying this regardless of brand, and not because I'm butt-hurt that Canikon has some features that we don't. If camera technology never made another move, I wouldn't care. I think it's great where it is.

So don't buy any new cameras from now on. No one is forcing you to. Many of the rest of us are happy to benefit from the continuing march of progress.

I think it is inevitable that Pentax will shoe-horn similar features to the 550D/7D into their next DSLRs.

The Japanese camera (and sensor) makers are a club whose members both track each other's products closely and also move forward co-operatively.

Nikon will also soon expand the video and sensor capabilities of it's DSLR's, and Pentax, Sony, Olympus etc will follow.

3D video pornography seems even more interesting. And the technology is becoming more and more accessible.

Stupid ??? 10 Million Canon made lenses in last 18 months

Stupid ??? 10,000,000 Canon made lenses in last 18 months, 20 Million Canon made lenses made in last 48 months. Lens sales are bread and butter of camera industry. Rebels drive lens sales. Canon T2i is a HD Dslr entry level homerun. If it were pentax we'd be singing its praises, right ???

Did you see this???

Canon has announced the production of its 50 millionth EF lens. The specific lens was one of the newly released EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USMs. EF mount lens production started in 1987. In September 2009, Nikon announced the 50 millionth lens for its F mount, launched in 1959.

Canon tells us: 'EF lens production started in March 1987. In Aug. 1995, we reached 10 million units. In Feb. 2001, 20 million in Jan. 2006, 30 million, and in Apr. 2008, 40 million. And after only 1 years and 8 months, we reached 50 million.'
