I hope so.

And please, somebody stop me before I become too smart-aleck

The only thing which must be typical for me is that I don't stop asking and hunting for answers. Which of course made me become a physicist. And left me more than once in a difficult situation (like being accused of sabotage during my military service ).

Are you an astro-physicist-- or just accused of taking up time and space at university?

I mean, when something hasn't been released you're as clueless as the rest of us, but as soon as it's in the wild (I'm thinking of the K-7 as the first example that comes to mind, that AF testing you did must have been read by a huge proportion of this board!) you swiftly become the resident 'geekipedian in chief'.

Incidentally, the above is me in awe of you, not mocking you. Your posts are always useful, if regularly beyond my pay grade, technically-speaking. And they're in your second language.

Talked to a friend of mine who uses medium format cameras, he said that if the pentax 645D is cheap then he will buy it. As the other options available are too expensive. He usually rents a Hasselblad that costs him 25K rs for a day.

It has always changed with the time of day (in Japan, I presume).

Vol.4 news update (Kodak KAF-40000 confirmed by Pentax Japan)

QuoteQuote:
☆ Pentax + news new ☆New Products [VOL.4] 2010.3.8 notice

Number of effective pixels is about 40 million pixels!
www.camera-pentax.jp/new

Many thanks for your time. New site notice

┃ 1. Product warning information
About 4000 adopted effective megapixel ultra-high-resolution sensors.
The extra large area imaging sensor is
Pixel pitch while there is room for ultra-high resolution,
Also get a sense of air as well as to express the solidity of the subject.
[source: Vol.4 news update to appear Tuesday 10:00 Tokyo time]

With all information we have (e.g., 1.7x surface factor wrt 35mm and Kodak being supplier for the earlier prototype), we can now close the case about the origin of sensor.

It is the Kodak KAF-40000 sensor (the same as in Leica S2 except for the form factor).
Now that it is official, read all about it here:
Kodak KAF-40000 Product Specification PDF
Kodak specifies a framerate of 1.3 fps (the absolute maximum with 4 channels (L/R A/B) and the specified maximum of 18 MHz would be 1.7 fps).

Expect to soon see 7304x5478 pixel images from a Pentax digital camera

EDIT:
I stand corrected. At the time I wrote this, we couldn't close the case about the origin of sensor yet. Because it may be the KAF-4000 OR a sensor chip from DALSA too. Read on below.

If the 645D uses a comparable 38MP sensor to the Leica S2, I guess that also means (like the Leica) you will be getting huge 106MB JPEG's out of camera, as Chris Weeks has found after using the S2. Yikes!

So if you shoot JPG (or even worse, RAW, probably) with either the 645D or S2 you may only be getting only about 10 images per gig of storage on SD card or hard disk. Those devices are gonna be filling up fast.

Throwing 100+ MB DNG's around in Lightroom or Photoshop isn't going to be fun either, I think, even with the highest spec PC.

Scary stuff.

The S2's RAW files are smaller than its JPEGs. Anyway, those that can afford the 645D can afford 32GB cards as well...
