I don't have 10 grand to spend on a camera when/if this thing comes to the states, but this thing has me excited. 10 grand for a MF camera is a damn good price, especially with those specs. I've never really been afraid that the Pentax brand would disappear forever, and now, the thought won't cross my mind at all for awhile.

The more I think about it, the 645D is pure Pentax:

* Inexpensive. Not "cheap," but not pointlessly overpriced.
* Especially considering what you get. It is, as far as I can tell, the first MF DSLR with dust reduction. Weather sealing. It's stuff that the other manufacturers haven't really bothered with, that doesn't (in the grand scheme of things) cost much to implement, but Pentax has been the only one with the balls to do it.
* In that sense, it's obviously true to the original 645's raison d'etre: a miniature field camera. It's inexpensive, tough, easy to use (it's got scene modes, for gods' sakes!) and compact.
* Students are going to love it.

There is, however, one thing that is very, very un-Pentax-like about it, something that takes bucks one of the grandest Pentax traditions and micturates all over it:

* The 645D will probably have best-in-class AF - WE'RE ALL DOOMED! THE END TIMES ARE UPON US!

Here's some food for thought:

Canon ID Mk IV Dimensions/Weight: 156x157x80mm/1230g (with battery)

Pentax 645D Dimensions/Weight: 156x117x119/1480g (with battery and 2 SD cards)

Looks awesome, specs are there, just wish my wallet was, too. Glad to see our brand step up and above what has been expected.

FAQ for 645D

It's important that pentax 67 system users can buy 645D - and use 67 lenses via adapter.

I don't think that + in SAFOX IX must stand for the same as in SAFOX VIII

As I wrote on DPR: "This new SAFOX is "SAFOX IX + wide-frame autofocus system". I think that + stands for "wide-frame" to better fit to MF frame, and SAFOX IX (without +) will be in K7 successor."

exactly, "+" should indicate that extra sensor is being used, intended to adjust the AF based on the ambient light

Yes, but SAFOX IX is new AF system and that extra sensor there is included already as standard and without need to put + in name. And this is why I think that + in 645D SAFOX IX+ stands for "wide-frame" as I wrote previously.

Ken Rockwell is some kind of id...t... I've never read before such sillest and funniest opus.
He is in hysterics.

Pentax 645D

He said that 1 AF point is better than 11, and 1-segment metering is better than 77.
Picture mode is no need. In-camera HDR is for amatuers. He forgot that 44*33 mm sensor is in various cameras on the market and there is no crop 1.0 in the world of 645 digital.

If you don't like to use it, don't use. It's easy.

Pentax' 33x44mm sensor isn't much bigger than 24x36mm; only 27% bigger

He-he...To put Pentax down, he uses linear dimensions...

I see no aperture or shutter speed dials. All I see is another confusing array of meaningless buttons that aren't going to help.
On the Pentax 645D, it looks like everything you actually need to do is only available via menus and stupid multi-function scroll wheels.

645NII had the best AF in MF world, for example.
