AF 85/1.4 is interesting lens. Very interesting.

I was disappointed to read elsewhere that a Sigma 180 mm macro lens with Pentax mount was discountinued (last year, I think) while the lens remained in production with other mounts.

A macrophotographer I respect has been using the lens (but not with a Pentax mount) to capture beautiful images.

Also, I've seen an older Sigma 180 mm macro lens mentioned. If anyone knows anything about quality of that older lens — or wants to sell a used Sigma 180 mm macro lens in the future for significantly below retail price, or knows of a reputable retailer who is selling a new or used one — I'd welcome the information.

I understand Tamron has a 180mm macro, but it appears that's not sold with a Pentax mount.

Now I have long been asking for a 9-16mm from Pentax to match the wide-angle coverage for other cropped-sensor formats and most times someone replies that it would be impossible... Well, guess not. Ever since Olympus had the 7-14mm F4 lens, I wished Pentax would at least match that coverage.

So now that we know it is possible can we have a Pentax DA* 8-16mm F4 please? Otherwise I may have to buy a Sigma

This is a 10x high zoom ratio ultra telephoto zoom lens incorporating Sigma’s original Optical Stabilizer function. This lens covers a wide range of focal lengths from 50mm to 500mm ultra telephoto. The OS (Optical Stabilizer) function offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. For Sony and Pentax mount, the built-in OS function of this lens can be used even if the camera body is equipped with an image sensor shift anti-shake system. As compensation for camera shake is visible in the view finder, the photographer can easily check for accurate focus and ensure there is no subject movement. Four SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide excellent correction of color aberration. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghost and ensures high image quality throughout the entire zoom range. This lens has a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.1 (at the focal length of 200mm) making it ideal for close-up photography. This lens incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), ensuring quiet and high speed AF as well as full-time manual focus capability. The addition of the optional 1.4x EX DG or 2x EX DG APO Tele Converters produce a 70-700mm F6.3-8 or a 100-1000mm F9-12.6 MF zoom lens respectively. This lens is equipped with a Petal-type hood to block out extraneous light. The filter size of this lens is φ95mm and the lens is supplied with a step down ring enabling digital cameras with an APS-C size image sensor to use an φ86mm filter.

I would rather have a FF Pentax DSLR with 12-24mm.

Hopefully, the 85/1.4 is priced to be a good alternative to Canon and Nikons 85/1.8 lenses. As it features HSM and a larger aperture, it may not, but I do still hope.

I hope this too. Recently I have started to think about leaving Pentax and going back to Canon, simply because I couldn't find acceptable replacement (in terms of money and optical quality) for my belowed canon 85 f1.8 USM. Well, I can say now that Sigma gave me the hope and a lot to thing about. It is really a shame that Pentax never came to idea to reproduce another 85mm lense based on the great optical design of the old manual lenses. I find this the biggest Pentax flaw in current lense offer. I know that there is 77mm f 1.8, but it costs a fortune. And, there is no USM/SDM too.

I believe the advantage to having the OS at longer focal lengths is that the image it stabilized prior to shooting, while looking through the viewfinder. I think that advantage alone would be very beneficial at 500mm!

If it were a choice of these two lenses only and if it were my money, I'd opt for the less-expensive (by quite a margin) older and slower version. But I'd wait to see what kind of reviews the new 8-16 gets - or how much it costs.
