New 55mm SDM 645D lens means no SDM II?

The release of the new 55mm f/2.8 SDM lens for the new Pentax 645D kinda got me thinking about the rumored SDM II. If Pentax was developing SDM II, surely they would have it ready for the new lineup of 645D lenses. I find it hard to believe they would release the new system with todays SDM system if the SDM II is almost ready.

Perhaps it is a new version, after all, if Nikon can have three different versions of AF-S so can Pentax.

There is no basis for concluding that SDM for the K-series is the same technology as SDM for the 645D!

Agree Ole, I suspect that SDm will just quietly be upgraded just like the BF/Ff issues with the 16-50mm. There were tons of them coming out defective at first and then the issue just faded away. I'm willing to bet that this is the newer version in the 645D. The mass in these lenses is much greater and would need much stronger motors to drive it quickly and acurately.

Plus Pentax has a fair amount riding on this body. It's already generating a great deal of buzz in forums all over the net. They can't afford to have Canikony owners saying, "hold on! this SDM thing is crap and breaks down".

For that matter, what makes folks think that the SDM for K mount hasn't already been upgraded. If memory serves, the problems were primarily in the 16-50 and 50-135 lenses. The DA 200/300/60-250 had none to one or two reported here and on Dpreview. For them to claim they fixed the problem, they would have to admit there was a problem in the first place :-)

SDM for DA/DA* is different from SDM for 645 lenses. IMO.
Different weight of lens, different bayonet.

I'm surprised nobody has signed the SDM petition with "My DFA 645 55mm has an SDM that died" as a pre-emptive strike :P

Yeah, the 645 lenses are big enough for the new patented Squirrel Drive Motor™. There's a small dawrf-squirrel inside driving the focusing helicoid. You get a water bottle and a 10 kg bag of nuts to feed the squirrel with every 645 SDM lens purchased.

Some squirrels can live for almost 20 years, but the average is ~12… less if you shoot a lot of birds like eagles, owls and such.

The good thing is that if you buy both a "zoom" and a "prime" you can "manufacture" your own SDMs.

If the motor can move DA* 300/4 and DA* 200/2.8 it can move D-FA 645 55/2.8 as well.
