Pentax Rangefinder Class Perhaps?

I saw this at The Online Photographer and wondered instantly if it might be a Pentax rangefinder.

Further thought: One that takes K-mount lenses?

I know this is pure speculation, but one can dream.

Update-

Well, it was fun, but the original post author has revealed his post as an April Fool's prank.

Nope. That wouldn't be called a rangefinder; that's just be called a mirror-less EVF camera, m4/3 competitor, Samsung NX killer, etc. But not a rangefinder.

The only thing that could be called a digital rangefinder (assuming it *is* a *digital* camera) would be something like a Cosina/Voigtländer Bessa R4D :-)

(excluding, of course, the Leica M series digital cams)

Not necessarily; they're just saying the guy that has the secret rangefinder is currently a Canon shooter. But he used to be a Leica shooter for a long time before that.

And again, it doesn't make sense for Canon to release a "rangefinder" either. When's the last time Canon had a rangefinder? They'd just call it a mirrorless EVF digital camera.

The only companies that would release and advertise something as a "rangefinder" are those that currently make or was making until very recently rangefinders.

The only companies that fit that bill are Leica and Cosina/Voigtländer.

Maaaaaybe Fuji with their GF670... GF670D? That'd be prohibitively expensive.

And again, it may not even be digital (I don't think the original tweet said anything about digital... correct me if I'm wrong).

In which case it could just be a Bessa R5, or a Fuji GF670II. Maybe even a new Leica film rangefinder. Who knows. It just won't be a Pentax OR a Canon (or a Nikon for that matter).

Only trouble is,
Gee whiz!
I'm dreaming
My life away...
No hint that it's Pentax.
No hint that it's PK.
No hint of anything but RF.

And AFAIK Pentax never made a RF.
And modern RF market is minescule.
And Hoya wants to make money.

So... I doubt it.
I may be wrong.
It's happened.
But... I doubt it.

Now that would be a strange twist of fate...

1. Leica made a medium format DSLR - something they had no experience with but Pentax does.

2. Pentax will make a digital rangefinder - something they have no experience with but Leica does.

I don't see Canon making rangefinders again, but who knows. They had some experience with that type of camera in the 50's and 60's.

Hey, at least Pentax has made one 39mm Leica thread mount lens: the SMC Pentax-L 43mm f/1.9 'Special'.

Asahi Optical was the Japanese firm that did more to "bust" the range-finder paradigm in the 135 format. Other than the 43mm ltd Special in m39 with matching finder that was seemingly targeted at a niche market of very expensive rf users, I don't see pentax getting into the body racket. More lenses wold make more sense based on some of the ltd lenses.

Edit: Rio is correct about Pentax not making a rangefinder, just the one lens. Honeywell did import a Mamiya RF under the Honeywell name which may cause a little confusion, but few even know about it. Some people will argue that the AF 135 cameras were an rf of sorts but that is stretching it plus they aren't interchangeable lens.

Apparently the best way to start a big rumor is to write a crazy a$$ed ambiguous blog and get it linked around.

It could be EPSON or ZEISS IKON.

I think EPSON - Cosina has 35/1.2 lens.
Anyway, it will be very expensive. But lower than M9.

One can hope

I, for one, would still like to see a Pentax EVF/EVIL system with a RF style body, but an APS-C sensor, and crippled KAF2 mount. That would be a really cool walking around camera with a DA pancake lens on it. <crossing fingers>
