thanks for the input everyone.

i bet that the release of 645D has pentax concentrating on that format especially, as some of you pointed out, there aren't any real gaps in the lineup. so i doubt pentax is in much of a hurry to release new dslr lenses.

with regard to 16-50/18-55, those won't work for me since i want at least 70mm reach and at least f4 throughout the range (which rules out all superzooms).
I beg to differ:

gap 1) any zoom wider than 16 at f2.8
gap 2) good super tele (prime or zoom longer than 300)
gap 3) true UWA prime (widest at the moment is 14mm which is "only" 20-21 equivalent how about 15 or 18mm equivalent = so we are talking 10-12mm prime)
gap 4) any NEW prime between 21 and 31 (this is probably the biggest and very important gap IMO)
gap 5) good non macro short to mid tele (something around 90-105 mms)
gap 6) any fast prime between 14 and 31

Pentax doesn't seams to see a problem:.... primes!!!! The only problem with pancace DA40 is lack of at least f2. f4 or f3.2 who is going to buy it for 600...? Where are f2, f1.4, f1.2, especially on crop sensor we'r going to need it.... everything we need is fast prime...., sorry there is ONE f1.4 + 3x limiteds below f2!!!!!

Sincerely, I just don't get it, we have currently in the prime lineup :
- 14mm/2.8
- 15mm/4
- 21mm/3.2
- 31mm/1.8
- 35mm/2.8 (macro)
- 40mm/2.8
- 43mm/1.9
- 50mm/1.4
- 50mm/2.8 (macro)
- 55mm/1.4
- 70mm/2.4
- 77mm/1.8
- 100mm/2.8 (macro)
- 200mm/2.8
- 300mm/2.8

In the zoom lineup:
10-17 /3.5-4.5 Fisheye
12-24 /4
16-45 /4
16-50 /2.8
17-70 /4
50-135 /2.8
55-300 /4-5.8
60-250 /4

Sure we could have had something faster and wider, but I must that at the moment I'm yet to see a picture taken at 24mm / FF that doesn't feel artificial. Ultra-wides have to me a feeling of engineering tour de force, but don't bring much to photography (and I do own the 10-17 so I'm used with the FOV)

We have excellent alternate providers with Sigma, Tamron, Zeiss and Voigtlander. Sure, apart from Sigma we're missing some supertele here, but as I said in a previous reply, the cost of a true high performance supertele is so high that the cost of a matching body is marginal compared to it. If you're willing to invest 6000$/ in a supertele, 2000$/ for a body is not that much.

My final argument would be a comparison with Leica, Leica have a fantastic range of wide to normal lenses, compact and fast. But they have nothing above 135mm. This never prevented Leica shooters to make lengendary shots, simply, the Leica system is made with specific constraints and photographers whose style match with those constraints have a great time with those cameras. Even if SLR layout allows for more flexibility, Pentax have made a clear choice in recent year : lightweight outdoor photography. The K-7 is the smallest and lightest rugged camera, the ltd primes are extremely compact with no equivalent in the competition, the zooms are even quite compact compared to the competition. Making a fast, ultrawide zoom would lead to a massive beast like the NIKON 14-24mm F2.8 AF-S G ED, Super tele are quite massive by nature.

I'm not saying that Pentax won't do it in the future, I'm just saying that at the moment they have quite a complete lineup on line with their philosophy. I would expect Pentax to put their effort for "extreme" lenses with their upcomming 645D. Ultrawides, Supertele etc make much more sense with a body made with the sole goal of image quality in mind (at price of size and weight, even it is quite compact for a DMF)

There is definitely a need for some different zooms in the Pentax lineup as far as the DA series goes. But you also need to consider that they probably still count all of those older and just as good FA and F, etc lenses as being part of the lineup, so they aren't horribly pressed to update those ones.

In the primes Pentax could do with another portrait lens that isn't macro, around the 100mm mark, but that isn't a priority I think.
Something in the extreme tele 400 to 600mm.
Pentax has been positioning their cameras as great for outdoors (compact and WR) so it makes sense that they want to provide for people shooting wildlife.
These lenses will be expensive, so Pentax need to see if they have enough market.
Maybe a 400mm F5.6 because it'd cheaper and let the market created by the well thought of K-X and K-7 to grow and justify the expansion.

Another walkabout lens? Other brands offer many lenses with combinations in 18-125mm range (18-105, 24-105mm, sigma's 18-125mm). Something like that, with sufficient quality would be appealing for many beginners and others to replace the kit lenses combo.

Rebirth of the 80-200mm F2.8? A fast telezoom is a staple for the market of serious enthusiasts and pros.

The thing is Pentax also has to provide for the 645D. It cannot lose the opportunity for growth that this camera can bring by leaving it as a very restricted system IMO.

The 100mm can focus to infinity can't it? I suppose they could make a non macro version for a little less, but I'd like to see a DA 50mm f/1.8 cheap lens like Canon and Nikon have.

I think we haven't seen so many new K-mount lenses lately, because Pentax were busy with 645D. As you say, they have to get it right.

Probably we will see some (a lot? ) new glass at Photokina - for both K and 645 mounts.

this is what i really like about pentax!

all i was saying was that the (relatively) cheap kit lenses,18-55+50-200 DA WR's, and the (relatively) expensive 16-50+50-135 DA*'s are not enough of a choice in terms of price, speed, and features. it would be great to have something better than kit lenses but cheaper than DA*'s.

agreed. macro focusing doesn't take away from your ability to use the 100mm as a portrait lens. it just adds to the versatility of the lens (and probably helps with resale value).

a cheap new 50mm f1.8 would be a terrific addition to the lens lineup even at the cost of the FA 1.4 market share.

I don't agree with the cheap 50/1.8 if the point is to have a plastic fantastic badly performing (for 90% critics I read) lens as the Canon/1.8 at around 200 euros:
* it won't be seen as serious (really 200 is very low for a prime, stupid I know but people won't take it seriously)
* it will perform like crap giving bad reputation to Petnax primes
* it will behave like crap because at that price it would really be a piece of plastic crap.

May I remind you the Canon/1.8 doesn't even have true USM? Yeah micromotors and AFAIK no manual focus override. Oouch !

I agree with red on the first part.

But I beg to differ in his opinion on the cheap 50mm lens. A cheap 50mm lens will probably made of plastic and is not good quality-wise.

Overall, I believe Pentax has the entire list of lenses available, be it primes or zooms. Only UWA (not the fish-eye version) and tele primes is what I intend to see Pentax came up with in the future.

as you can see from your list.
There are two big holes!
1) between 21-31
2) between 77-200 non macro

and something above 300 would really be appreciated by a lot of people

The 135 for sure, but 28/2 would be too close to 31/1.8 IMO, so I'd love to see more something in 24-26 range at say f2-2.4?
How about that? Shall I write to Santa

Let's wish for something quirky, in best Pentax tradition

On APS-C, 23 mm is actually closer to the classical 35mm FOV than 24mm. f/2 doesn't even give us the DOF equivalent of a 35mm/2.8 on film, so let's go a little lower. Here's my wish, then: DA 23 mm f/1.9 WR

:-)
