I agree with Jim. To build more market share, one must appeal to a variety of users. The DA-300 is an excellent lens, but unless you would like to carry more than one camera, it lacks FL flexibility in many wild-life situations. A 100-400mm zoom would be great!

With regard to the original thread, Pentax needs its three DA zooms to be ultra reliable. If there are still problems with SDM, then they should re-engineer the 16-50, 50-135, 60-250 to fix whatever problems may exist. I think there is still a cloud over these lenses until we see some positive action or explanation. I have 2 SDM lenses with no problems, but there have been several problem reports from respected users.

Six more DA*s are needed to fill the line in my IMO. DA* 250-500 f4.5, DA* 11-16 f2.8,
DA* 20 f2, DA* 200 f4 MACRO, DA* 90 f1.8, DA* 400 f2.8

Then rework the DA line..

DA 10-17 f3.5-4.5 FISHEYE WR, DA 17-70 f4 WR, DA 12-24 f4 WR, DA 16.5-135 f3.5-5.6 WR,
DA 80-400 4.5-5.6 WR

That should keep Pentax Busy ...(:

I will see a Pentax DA* 70-200 mm f2.8 with a very fast AF, maybe a SDM2, to do very nice sport photos. Or also a 300 mm f2.8 with SDM2 but I don't really understand why Pentax don't do this lens, maybe they comes with the full format.

All that is great guys, but I just don't see them doing it, not in the continuation of the current DA line (*, no *, ltds), unless some of these lenses are so close to fruition that it make sense financially to bring them out (what a stretch). They will probably start making lenses that are compatible with FF that you can also use for APS-C. So sort like D FA. In fact, it is D FA. Hell, they have already done just that (D FA 100). Maybe D FA*, or D FA ltds, in whatever the focal lengths that your wallet desires. Even zooms (gee, what an after thought). It is not like many of us would flock back to 135mm films any time soon. So why bother with lenses that cover FF?

I think I am wrong, or that the writing is on the wall already, as some of you have suggested earlier.

So, it is official. I mean unofficial, but yes Pentax is coming out with FF. I am 100% SURE.

The next lens should be a DFA 200-600 f 5.6.

I see little point in having the minimum focal length be anything less than 200mm, since there's already plenty of available lenses that cover up to that range. Why duplicate more than half of the focal length range of the lenses already available just for a bit more reach, as in a 100-400, and sacrifice the long end maximum, which is really what's needed? A new zoom extending to 400mm only adds additional coverage from 200-400 if you already have a 70-200 or something similar. 200-600 keeps the zoom ratio in the optimum 3:1 (biggest zoom ratio without introducing optical compromises) and gives the most reach while creating the least possible duplication of existing zoom ranges. An f 5.6 is quite reasonable for this reach, and keeps the size/weight/cost within reason. Optimize the performance at 600mm, since that end of the range is what is important for such lenses (i.e., don't have it perform at its best in the middle of the zoom range and drop off at maximum focal length, like the 60-250, according to tests of that lens that I've seen), and you've got a winner.

you're very close to asking pentax to start producing the FA* 250-600 again
wasn't that an extremely expensive lens?

I think there is a very limited market for the very long/fast lenses as they become
incredibly expensive. The 600s make good bird lenses---I've got one, but they are so heavy that I tend to use my 300 F2.8 and/with a converter for logistical reasons in many instances.

Or one could ignore the donut bokeh and use reflex lenses... has anyone here tried the Pentax reflex zoom?

My own feeling is that they may produce a WR version of the 55-300 and yet another clutch of boring primes.

If they do produce a 100-400 f4-5.6 WR SDM zoom or similar at reasonable money (no more than a Canon 100-400 L IS), then they could sell a bucketload, just as Canon do with their 100-400, but that just makes far too much sense, as would a quality WR SDM 18-200/3.5-5.6!
A zoom that went out to 400mm would be great. It could start around 150mm as far as I'm concerned. Has to have better autofocus than the 55-300mm though if you are going to shoot anything that flies with it. (Which is why a prospective 55-300 WR is of dubious value as a birding lens).

Come on guys. They ain't making a zoom up to 400 mm exclusively for APS-C. This might as well be the end of the DA line as we know it.

You do know you are obligated to show us shots with that as soon as you can?

It's written down somewhere as the "bragging about great purchases" clause.
