well i certainly hope that we'll hear or see something about the super telephoto lens that used to be on their last published lens roadmap. That and the TC. Sure wouldn't mind seeing something that will eventually replace the K7.

Very much agree!

Would love to see Pentax bring out at least a 500mm, preferably an F4 or a 400mm with a decent TC... from my perspective the lens line up is covered very well up to 300mm, they are just missing a modern lens in the 500mm range with SDM.

That would be great. Cameras are fine, but lenses are more important and there are still gaps. My personal wish: 400/4 + 1.4x tc and 2x tc. They could ofcourse just make the old FA 400/2.8 in the current DA* design, but a f/4 would be more affordable and easier to carry around (not to speak about the smaller tripod).

But I have the feeling, that this will not happen.

It will happen, because Pentax has a large hole above 300mm. And traditionally they always had a 500mm. I do see a new one in the foreseeable future.

K7 replacement will be due for at least an announcement according to regular product schedules. Kx more likely next year, but you never know. I can't help thinking there will be a more entry level camera and the Kx replacement will be more upmarket.

Or maybe a new mirrorless camera?

Well, traditionally they had only one manual 500, and never had an AF one, while they had, I think, at least four 4 different 400 (one AF) and two 600 (both AF).
But seeing how Pentax seems to convert old focal lenght by the crop factor, it seems the 300 (that convert to 450mm) seems to cover the old role of both 400 and 500 mm, so I expect a 400mm in the role of the film-era 600mm. A 400/4, with a couple of rear converter as good as the old L ones, would complete nicely the lens line-up on the long side.

500mm for a 35mm SLR.

300mm is quite long on an APSC camera at 450mm. A 400 F4 would be quite big, but provide as much reach as Pentax's longest regular tele (if you ignore the hyper-rare lenses).

I've used an FA* 400 F5.6 which is a nice compact lens. Not fast but easy to hand hold. Would love to get hold of one.

Indeed, as far as handholding a lens goes then the 400mm f/5.6 is an excellent choice. I could see such a lens in Pentax's lens lineup.

500mm And 600mm lenses are indeed fairly special, most often used by birders, who almost always work on APS-C. For birding, and other wildlife shots, a tele lens cannot be long enough. I have seen quite a few birders leaving Pentax lately, because of the lack of longer lenses (and, of course, the slow AF). It would be nice if Pentax could offer a 500mm lens to those people. As I said: Pentax traditionally had a 500mm lens or longer in its lineup (right from the late 50's up to fairly recently when the FA* 600mm f/4 was discontinued). I don't see any reason to not offer such a 500mm or longer lens unless Pentax will stick to APS-C for the rest of its life.

Really?

Announced 20 May 2009. It will be 1 year and 4 month old on September, 2010.

K-7 was announced after 1 year and 4 month after K20D.

Definitely not; I bought my K-7 in July, 2009. So my camera is 9 months old by now.

It's funny how most manufacturers still coordinate the launch of new products with big trade shows, guaranteeing a frenzied competition for media attention. It still makes some sense for small companies to ride the coattails of big events, but larger companies can easily get the word out - and in a cleaner, quieter media landscape - in between big shows. The Internet has changed the game.

So Pentax can either launch new cameras @ Photokina and then wait in line as the major mags, DPReview, and others focus on previewing and reviewing the newest Canikons first. Or they can launch before, and get front page coverage in advance. Leica, for example, launched the M9 with a factory tour, and received great exposure.

Yep but K20D was an upgraded K10D, not a whole new camera. It may influence its replacement (or not).

EDIT: made the calculation: IF K-7 successor is announced at the Photokina it would place all flagship replacements from K10D at 480 to 500 days atfer release.

So it is very likely indeed.

Actually, the K-7 with the FA* 600/4 has fast enough AF for any bird known to man....
