SDM Lenses shipping?

Don't know if you've seen this, but on monday there was a slim post on Ned Bunnels blog just stating "SDM Lenses Shipping" and a photo of the two lenses in their boxes.

NED BUNNELL: SDM Lenses Shipping

Hmm...

That's Ned teasing us I imagine?

AFAIK it's still 27/7 for the DA*50-135 and 11/8 for the DA*16-50 in Japan. 15/8 for both in USA. No word for Europe...

It probably means that the first three exemplars are now ready and are transported on a handcart to the nearest harbor.

The lenses are shipping this week from the factory in Vietnam. It takes 2 - 6 weeks for the shipments to arrive to the different destinations and additional 10-14 days for the shipment to be distributed to the dealers by the local distributor. Japan gets their samples first because they are closest to the factory .

Take care

Of course, that explains it all! tx!! BTW, I kinda like the idea that two boxes with my name on (well not really of course) might now be sitting in a container in a Vietnamese harbour... Esp since I'm getting them for a trip to Cambodia, which means they will nearly make a full circle by october...

You really should read his post to the end

A quick update to let folks know that production units of the 16-50 and 50-135 lenses have started to ship. We received a limited number of units last week. My understanding is that first units will arrive in all markets in early August. While I can't comment on the actual number of units being shipped, based on our "current" back order status here in the US, it looks like we will not fill all back-orders until the end of September. Please note that this estimate is not 100% accurate, as I have no way of knowing if the "current" orders from dealers reflects the true demand for these lenses. In any case, this is good news. I had told my friends in Japan that if we didn't start shipping the lenses soon, we'd have to change the definition of SDM to "Some Day Maybe" (smile).

He actually added that just now... Initially it was just the picture of the boxes.

Hm, does anyone know if 17th Street Photo is backordered on the 16-50mm? Looks I'll have to give them a call before I pre-order after all.

Just had word from my European dealer that half August is the message from Pentax for Europe too, same as the US. They told me "Pentax Europe promised"...

They did add a very limited supply in the first shipment, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed mine will be in there...

Wasn't Pentax stock piling lenses to meet the demand once the selling starts?!
Looks like we'll have the K10D release scenario after all.

"I'M A PENTAXIAN. A STARVING PENTAXIAN.
I ONCE BOUGHT A *IST DS AND WAS VERY
HAPPY TO SEE THAT I CAN FIT ALL OLD LEN-
SES UNTIL I FOUND THAT THERE IS ONLY A
HANDFUL OF NEW LENSES AND EVEN LESS
OTHER EQUIPMENT. I HEAR A LOT OF BEDTIME
STORIES ABOUT THOSE HEADY DAYS WHEN
THE CAMERA KNOWN SIMPLY AS "THE PENTAX"
WAS THE BEST-SELLING SLR MADE. I STILL
DON'T SPEND COUNTLESS HOURS WHINING.
I JUST TAKE PICTURES. AND WHILE I ONCE
MAY HAVE BEEN TEMPTED, ON OCCASION,
TO TURN TO A STRANGER ON AN ELEVATOR
AND SAY, "PENTAX IS JUST ABOUT TO RELE-
ASE 16-50 STAR LENS AND I CAN'T WAIT TO
GET ONE" I'M NOT ANYMORE. I'D REALLY RA-
THER BE USING THE LENS THAN TALKING
ABOUT IT. I,M NOT SURE THAT PENTAX UNDER-
STANDS THAT PHOTOGRAPHERS NEED CAME-
RAS AND EQUIPMENT TO TAKE PICTURES.
THEIR NEW DIGITAL SLR'S ARE THE RESULT
OF LISTENING TO PENTAXIANS AND DELIVE-
RING TOOLS FOR TRUE PHOTOGRAPHY LOVERS.
THESE CAMERAS ARE ALREADY CREATING
MANY MORE LOYALISTS. SO THE QUESTION IS:
WILL THESE NEWCOMERS COUNT THEMSELVES
AMONG THE STARVING DIEHARDS? HEY, PENTAX
JUST MIGHT ANNOUNCE ANOTHER DELAY"
