Macro Ring Flash for Ricoh GR?

Hello Everyone...

I just got my new Ricoh GR at the beginning of this month and I'm beginning to love shooting macro using the macro mode

I have a plan to use the macro ring flash on my GR, is there anyone using it on the GR?

Since it is pentax forum, is the AF160FC Auto Macro Ring Flash compatible for the GR plus GH-3 adapter?

I'm waiting for your opinions and experiences

Thanks in advance

Haven't tried that, since I don't have GR adapter, but I tried regular Pentax mount flash and P-TTL does not work (which is expected). I am pretty sure the situation with AF160FC will be the same. It will mount easily (since adapter thread is 49mm and AF160FC comes with 49mm adapter), and it will fire but without P-TTL. With AF160FC that means you're limited to 3 manual settings: FULL, 1/4, 1/16. That said, the manual that comes with a flash has nice table "subject distance/flash power/aperture/ISO", so you could get around that using excellent distance scale of GR and, in fact, P-TTL metering in Macro is approximate at the best.

But you may run into other problem - AF160FC at 1/16 power is too powerful for GR macro distances. Consulting the above mentioned table: ISO 100, 1/16 power, f/16 -> subject distance 0.25m. Luckily, ND filter will probably cut this to half, or give you equivalent of f/32, but that still goes to 0.13. You may get less light by using just half of the flash, but my assumption would be that lighting subjects at the maximum GR magnification (0.10m and that's from sensor) would be tricky at best. Which is a pity, because at P-TTL flash can go all the way to 1/64.

Bottom line, I wouldn't buy the flash just for GR, and you might be better of with some LED based flash for such a short distances. But if you are thinking about using it on some Pentax camera anyway, it's a wonderful toy...

PS: The other issue is that your subjects may spontaneously burst into flames being so close to the flash.
