I have a K1 and KP and when I open the files in DCU (v5.9.3) it shows jpgs and dngs - I do the same with the GR lll files and it only shows the jpgs, the dngs are greyed out...can anyone tell me why this is?

So far as I'm aware, Pentax Digital Camera Utility support for raw files is limited to Pentax cameras - not Ricoh. Indeed, if I remember correctly, only a subset of Pentax cameras are supported by it. It will read JPEGs from any camera...

Ahhh...that will explain it then! Thank you, I guess I just assumed because they are the same company both both brands would be supported.

DCU 5x ships with the GRII but doesn't seem ship with the GRIII. Support of the GRII is probably why Ricoh dropped "PENTAX" from the name. The K-30/50 did not ship with PDCU/DCU either but rather a trimmed down version of SilkyPix. However DCU, AFAIK works, with files from the K-30/50.

However, DCU is backwardly compatible with all Pentax DSLRs since the *istD
Probably part of the licensing arrangement with Silkypix that allows them to include a copy with every DSLR.
Similarly the RAW Converter software supplied by Samsung with their NX cameras was also Silkypix based … that will only open pictures taken with Samsung cameras.

Thank you both... I've not done much with DCU beyond trying it out occasionally. For some time I was a dedicated Adobe Lightroom 6 user... now, mostly RawTherapee and Darktable with occasional use of Lightroom 6 when absolutely necessary (which isn't often, with Pentax at least). In the past I found DCU slow and clunky, but on my current machine it's reasonably nippy by comparison. I don't think I'll use it much, but it's nice to have another arrow in the quiver, so to speak...

Thanks for the info - I mainly use DxO Photolab and Affinity but love to clog up my computer with any photo-editing software I can get, so had been messing around with DCU!

This turned up on a local FaceBook group a few weeks ago … they send you a link to the program and a serial number ... seems legit but I haven't actually tried the program.

If you're considering other raw converters, I would seriously recommend the open source, completely free RawTherapee. It can seem a bit daunting at first, but it's really worth learning to use it - even just the basics, which will be enough for most of what you'd want and need to do. I have numerous raw converters, and RawTherapee is the one I choose most of the time...

Thanks Mike. Yes, I downloaded it a few weeks ago (because I read that it shows the separate images when pixel shift is used) but haven't really looked at it properly yet. I am using DxO Photolab to tweak/process the raw files (their denoise is great) followed by Affinity to create the jpgs from the dngs and am finding that a good combo for me.

If you want to use raw edit and simulate in-camera color, you can consider this Lightroom plugin : PerfeFilm GR 😊 The color seems to be very good reproduced.

When I downloaded the program from that link it was totally free, a serial number was included in the associated e-mail … maybe it was a limited time offer … sorry
