In case anybody wonders, the modification is more difficult on a 5DII, the corner of the mirror frame has to be removed to make enough room for the lenses.
Hopefully the current rumors regarding the Pentax FF will eventually come true and I won't need to do this another time.
Dirty lens porn.

Ban this sick filth!!!

Do you really have to dremel the body if you have one of those adapters where the Pentax lens is mounted at 2 O'clock instead of 12 O'clock?
Have bought a 5D after seeing your modification (for the use of Pentax K lenses), and am shaving the mirror at this very moment.

What's the problem (what damage will occur) if I only shave the mirror?
The adapter mounted at 2'O is for APSC canon DSLR.
If you are using it on FF canon DSLR, you still need the modification.
I have the adapter called "Kipon" that will mount your lens at 12'O position.

Shaving the mirror give you more clearance on wide angle lens / some lens with larger rear elements.
My 5D mirror would hit the elements on both Super-Takumar 50/1.4 (8element) and S-M-C takumar 50/1.4.
Now, I changed to a 1Ds mark II, the mirror will no longer hit both lens. I believe it is related to the mirror movement of 5D.

You can mount (turn and lock) an unmodified Pentax lens? That's odd, I see no way how that would be possible, not with the adapters I know.
I am curious, can you show pictures of the mirror box, the back of the lens and the adapter?
Hey 721, I can indeed mount an unmodified K-mount lens. But I only tried this when I already had shaved of 1mm of the mirror.
The adapter I used: http://www.amazon.de/dp/B002Z4V3O6/ref=pe_386171_37038021_TE_M3T1_dp_2
Here you have the pictures (the mirror was still inside when I first tried, also at the moment there is 2mm shaved off.)

A few days ago I got the Kipon adapter and had time to dremel the mirror box and some more of the mirror corner. After I had finished my work on the mirror box I tried a Pentax lens and it worked!
But, I got out my 135mm f/2.5 and the mirror slammed it, so back to the dremel and taking of more of the corner of the mirror. After that the camera stopped working (shutter curtain refused to go up :/ )

Now after some days I took the 5D back of the shelve and it looks as if it is working just fine now! So I got myself a Fullframe Pentax

Thanks 721 for all the info!

Scary! Sounds like small piece of plastic might have blocked the curtain.
Good to hear it's working. Enjoy it, old Pentax lenses are way more fun on 35mm!

Just shaved my 5d mirror, once yesterday and once today. I had a full battery in the camera at both times (kept camera off) and the battery was empty after shaving yesterday so I thougth the camera was broken. So I kept filing today so I could use the tak 50 1,4, all fine. So I went outside with the fresh battery, took like 40 pictures and the battery was dead again. Very strange...

Old thread. Is it possible that you're shorting out some battery contacts with some shavings? Seems unlikely but possible. Battery hot when you removed it? Magic smoke smell?

I have no idea what caused it. The first battery I can not explain how it went to 0% charge. I left the mirror taped up over night. Maybe the camera draws power then for some reason.

The second battery might have been bad. Have never used it before - it's the original battery so it might be worn out, just bought the camera. When I put the old battery in the charger it showed 50% charge even tho the camera would not operate with it.

Anyway, I put together a small guide, didn't find anything good to follow when I did my mirror.

5d mirror shave <- how to "safely" shave your mirror.
