Umm, Nikon and Pentax get more out of the Sony APS-C 16Mp sensor thus far compared to Sony themselves, so my point is well known. Nikon and Canons full frame cameras are considered leagues above the Sony A850 and A900, so much so only a fool would debate otherwise. So I won't argue with your obvious amazing knowledge. But I would happily take the D800 over the old A900 anyday, ISO50 and 16bit images equal drool worthy, especially if it's a Sony sensor.
Do you think that you could compare sensor in your K-7 with the sensor in K-5? It is not fair to compare different age sensors with each other.

Sure I can, The K-5 trounces the Samsung K-7 sensor in almost every way, you could argue colour fidelity and detail down low, but DXO can already do the rest for you?

Well fair is subjective, if you mean the later sensor is usually better, well that was my point of saying the D800 is better than an A900. And why I couldn't believe Joe thought the A900 was better.

K-5 sensor is the same as in Nikon D7000, both made by Sony.
Sonys way to think about future is different than those conservatives like Pentax and Canon, Nikon have some new ideas like the sensor in V1 with integrated AF character.
Sony with SLT is giving f1/2 sensitivity lead for others, but the rest of the differences comes from the software, and in that, Sony seems to have other kind of approach, that approach seems to be even different in A series compared to NEX series because of different staff taking care of the fine tuning of the software, especially conserning the handling of the JPEG pictures.
If we forget the differences in SLT and the softwares, what is so middle-class in A900, or A700, or A77?

The A900 is last generation, only 12bit D800 is 16bit and extended ISO will give better dynamic range, and it's not 36.3megapixel, it also doesn't have an optional filter-less model.. (That's just sensor and processing, not the camera functions and lenses etc)

But I'm not sure I understand the reasons why I'm being made to comment on three of Sonys cameras? I'm only here for full frame, and you're better waiting for reviews and pics from the D800e to compare against the A900 to make your own mind up on what difference a newer sensor makes.

A900 is the last but old, wait for just coming comparable model from Sony.
Yes, this is FF discussion, but I took the APS-C models in comparison too, because they also telss something about Sonys capability to produce high end bodies.

SLT FF sounds just wrong. I haven't tried the a900, but that large OVF is supposed to be gorgeous.

Here an opinnion from a person thinkin more positive on Sonys future:
And now the good news: I have been told by our sources that Sony will first share the sensor to Nikon and than use it on their own FF camera which will be announced early 2012! The exact release date has not been chosen yet but I have been told there are is a huge pressure to release it as soon as possible. Compared to the Nikon D800 the Sony (A99?) will have slightly different specs and a lower(!) price. The Nikon D800 can take 4 frames per second, records 1920 × 1080/30p and cost 300.000 Yen (3.000 Euro, or $4000). The major difference is that Nikon has an optical viewfinder while the Sony has SLT technology. Meanwhile the Sony A900 has been discontinued and you will see some nice rebates soon. I will keep you updated with specs and news I am getting form my sources. It’s really an exciting time

These guys are guessing there will be a a950: Sony Alpha A950 in the works? | Photography News | What Digital Camera

- but according to the rest of the rumor mill, you're right, ogl.

(A shame, really, but good for Pentax if they have any plans for a FF Pentax based on the same sensor)

Well, maybe you misunderstood my reply - I mentioned the A900 and provided the BH link to it in direct response to your "Sony makes average bodies" statement, as I quoted - it was not a comparison of the sensors, it was only meant to debunk your "Sony makes average bodies" statement; the A900 IS NO WHERE NEAR just an average body .

Now, this brings up something else - now we are seeing reference to FF SLT's, why not a FF SLT?

Because translucent mirrors remove a large percentage of the light to the sensor, thus wasting 20% of the available light to the sensor.

The only advantage it gives is for focusing in video mode at the expense of photo image quality and unwanted noise, only a trade off for consumer class cameras and not professional cameras... (ie Sony)
