Fuji and Samsung made the choice to stick with APS-C intheir MILC camera's. So for Pentax there is still FF or APS-H to stand out.
Man you'll never give up on APSH will you Ron

Maybe Pentax would be better off making the world's smallest and lightest FF DSLR...
Probably Pentax would be better off making the worlds cheapest FF DSLR. Any enthusiastic amateur wanting to go FF would choose Pentax instead of Canikon... (But then they would have to know about it too though!)

Making the world cheapest FF didn't help Sony. Everyone wanted a Nikon or a Canon. But making APS-C mirrorless cameras helped it a lot.

I think you guys are being too hard on the APS-H concept. These days, we're no longer bound by the dimensions of slide film or printing paper. We're free to crop to whatever the ideal is for a given photo. In that context...freed from traditional boundaries...APS-H begins to offer a very good compromise between APS-C and FF.

those of us that still print are bound by paper sizes somewhat (I miss my full 645 frame - pretty close to perfect for standard prints

That's true. But we all know Sony didn't do it right.

If Pentax releases a FF DSLR with K-mount. That recognizes the lenses mounted to it. (Like the K5 does now.) It could auto-crop the DA's attached to it.

Pentax has a advantage Sony didn't have. The user base already has lots of legacy FF glass that they're using on their APS-C's. En there's lots more to get. In other words, the lens-lineup is huge and affordable.

Nikon's FF cameras auto-crop. Few really use it or go on about it.

The Sony lens-mount legacy is about 2-3x larger than Pentax's K-mount. Minolta always had revenues about 3x more than Pentax from the 1980's until Sony took over. Sony lost many Minolta diehards, but they still started from a lager installed base. No inherent advantage to Pentax in market share here.

Go to Home of the Minolta / Sony a-mount dSLR photographer for a peek.

they started from a larger base and blew it IMO, there are far fewer that made the transition than were available. Pentax seems to have retained a greater percentage of the user base
Pentax's big advantage will be in their ability to design a camera that appeals to their base, and outperforms Sony's using the same sensor. The sony cameras in general are Cludgy (sorry it's really the only word i could think of)

I noticed the oppertunity to drop the APS-H

On the other hand we are getting more and more lensmounts and sensorsizes these days. With Nikon 1 series, Fuji's 1/2" sensor, Canon G1x and the rumor that Samsung is coming with a different sized sensor in Ex1 follower it isn't just like the old days.

So I do see that APS-H isn't a funny idea anymore.

What do you think about this professionals opinnion:
DSLRs are a dying breed – 3rd Gen Cameras are the Future

Could pentax be one of the first of making 3rd generation cameras?
If I understood right, the 3rd generation could be called "fully electronic system camera".
I have some ideas/suggestions/opinnions about future:
1. The body do not have any moving parts when taking the picture.
2. Even the lens should not have any moving part when taking the picture.
3. Lenses will have their own software which informes the body what should be modified to make the picture right, means that the only job for the lens is to make sharp picture, the software will take care of all faults coming from more simple and light weight lens construction.
4. This new camera could use some kind of new generation sensor, which can have high ISO with high quality picture as a result.
5. FF size may be not needed anymore, even the system size can be smaller than no FF DSLR:s today.
6. Believe me, there will for sure be third generation cameras which have no limitation coming from film era.

It's not a funny idea at all. The only reason people frown upon it is because Canon used it and dumped it.

I would love to see Pentax using a bigger sensor, but not so big that the DA's can't be used on it. Because of the biassed opinions they definitely shouldn't call it "APS-H", even if it has the same size. Maybe APS-P? Or PFF?

Because aperture and focus are things of the past. Sweet.

The Lytro camera is pretty close to that concept, even if it does suck. Future is going to be interesting for photography...
