Pentax Full Frame Dream Crushed Today

Full Frame Dream Crushed today. Pentax change the description of the new DA50 f1.8 to "mid tele" from "normal'.

See this page: http://www.pentax.jp/japan/news/announce/20120208.html

Ouch

It's still possible they have FA/D-FA lens to announce in combination with a FF...

Was it a DA before? If so, they just correctly corrected the description.

I doubt this means anything other than they've adjusted their language to suit the present situation. People jump at shadows, but it gives some of us more to talk (complain) about, which is easier than getting out and taking pictures

With Nikon releasing the D800 soon, I would have thought this would be a great time for full frame lovers. Personally, I'd have to buy almost all new lenses any way, so i takes little difference whether it's a Pentax or a Nikon. Not to mention there are people trying to dump their D700s to buy D800s. These are happy times of FF lovers as far as I can tell.

I don't think this news has any bearing on whether Pentax are planning FF or not. Pentax currently only offer crop sensor DSLRs, so they have simply amended the lens description to reflect that. They are not going to give out clues and spoilers if a FF is being planned. Interesting that they made the 'mistake' in the first place...

For the same reason, the upcoming PF interview with Pentax will be a damp squib in terms of clarifying full frame plans.

isn't DA supposed to be designed specifically for cropped sensors?

Tell that to the DA 35 F2.4...

...which brings up a point, if it's DA - then the descriptions should match what DA lenses have been described in the past, no? Calling the 50 1.8 normal if the 35 F2.4 is also normal would be silly. So can anyone dig up the description of the 35 F2.4?

The FA 50mm isn't being discontinued, though. A few teasers from our interview with Pentax Japan:

QuoteQuote:
4:00(Interviewer) Is the new DA50mm f/1.8 going to be replacement for the FA 50 or are you going to have both on the market?

4:09(Kawauchi) The FA50 will be continued as it is. The 50mm prototype shown has a whole new optical design. When compared to the usual 50mm, we aim for a reasonable price point. We plan to sell both the FA50mm F/1.4 and DA50mm F/1.8 as different products.

10:56(Interviewer) (Paraphrased)
What's missing in your camera lineup?

10:30(Kawauchi) We continuously consider 35mm (full-frame), but it has to be different from what other manufactures are releasing and lenses supporting 35mm have to be prepared. We think these are the principal challenges. So for example, even if we decide to make a full size SLR in the future, we will release what is not available from the other makers. We cannot comment and we do not know when it will be.

So a FF K01 might be the only option? That would be different.

A K-5-sized full-frame would also be different

In general it really is...

Too bad Pentax isn't electing to join the party. A slightly-larger FF K-5 with the FA Limiteds in a small bag... Folks would fall in love.

...and EXTREMELY welcome. Hell I'd prefer a K-r sized full frame but I suspect I'm in the minority.

I couldn't care less about the size. All I see is that the Pentax FF idea isn't crushed at all.

Wouldn't a K-mount FF already be something the other makers lack? Not to mention a K-mount FF with in-body SR and fully WR.
