If Pentax got into FF, it would be very cool if they made a student version that is fully manual. Just like the K1000 or ZX-M, but digital and lcd display.. very basic. Perfect for students as there are tons of high quality manual k-mount lenses out there and very cheap. Could call it the K1000D.

Fully Manual (No AF, or SR)
Full Frame sensor and LCD display
High quality body, glass prism, metal mount
Split-image focus screen
Pop-up flash
Cost less than $1000.

It could look something like the Pentax ZX-M:

I was very excited about the MX-1 until I realised it wasn't full frame... would have been perfect i think. I wouldn't mind a small 'no frills' FF digital camera, but then the 'frills' don't really take up much space, except for the SR.

I don't see the point other than from an aesthetic point of view. You can pick up a K-01 for $250 or a generation old Nikon and Canon entry level camera for the same price. They all have fully manual modes for those willing to learn. How much cheaper can Pentax make an FF camera?

Pentax was the leader of student cameras. Why not make one geared towards students? Manual mode on AF, students cheat. When I took photography classes, the instructor said no AF cameras. Also it would be very cool to have classic shutter speed dial and a fully manual version would reduce costs and make it affordable for students.

Cost to develop should be minimal as the technology is already here. A fully manual FF for students could easily cost less than $1000.

FF sensors still aren't cheap enough for the target group of such a concept to be comfortable investing in it. The lenses are where it's all at for the most part of photography. So I think a FF camera should debut for Pentax as a higher end model. Students could do well with a cheaper K-5 or even K10D/*ist D second hand, then getting the right lenses.

I agree that the first FF should be high end.. I'm thinking 2014/15. If Pentax can get students hooked on their cameras, they then might buy a higher end Pentax. Same strategy they used back in the film days.

I spent $7,000 for a FF fully manual digital that would take some of the old manual lenses I have, because it was what I wanted and was the only one on the market. I have not regretted it, but if Pentax had offered a manual FF dSLR (optical finder) I would have bought it instead. A FF version of the K-5 would be OK, but only if the optical finder were good for manual focus, as I would want to use my old Pentax lenses. (Of course Pentax would rather we buy all new lenses as well.)

I would like to see a Pentax body (FF or aps-c) that has only basics - autofocus, Av, M, B and no jpeg and movie mode. Also, no SR and all kinds of digital filters, hdr and noise reduction. I don't need live view, user modes and button customization. I believe that only basic functions could make a camera cheaper, faster and more reliable. You can always make auto jpegs in raw developing software, and to preview a photo in windows or any other OS is not an issue anymore.

I disagree.. One can buy the D600 new for less than $1500! Now take away AF and SR and Pentax could get below $1000. Remind you this would be 2014/15 and prices on sensors will continue to drop.

Nikon has economies of scale and a huge market share. The D600 is a product with wide appeal. A Pentax digital FF with no features has a very narrow appeal, and Pentax has no market share...Nikon is also able to sell low margin cameras because they can sell high margin items like lenses...

If a student has to learn on a fully manual camera, there are already millions of fully manual FF cameras available, I own half a dozen myself...

The K1000 was one of the most successful cameras in history and still widely used today. I think a digital equivalent would be very popular too. Id buy one.
